my ex's first bike was a zx14. but he'd ridden other bikes before that one. never a liter bike though. since 2009 he's put 13000 miles on and never wrecked...
... yet

there is a learning curve, a 1000cc bike makes for a very steep learning curve. Some people learn faster then others. Some people start out a bit farther up the curve then others.

when you swing your leg over for the very first time it helps to have a little forgivness on your side... the 2015 Gixxer has exactly 4.2 ounces of it, the rest is angry, rubber burning, arm straightening, raw horse power...

yes, we make it look easy to put the key in, boot up 100+ ponies and wheelie over to the significant others house...

... that took years of practice, not minutes thinking with the John Thomas.

I dont believe you did the math correctly. tats plus muscle plus no gear equals Harley Davidson. Go ahead and recheck my figures.

I am pretty sure mustache, leather vest and sunglasses are somewhere in the Harley equation, it's been awhile since i've reviewed that proof though

I hate to split from the pack but, my younger son got a Kawi 250 at 15. He rode it for a few months and then got a GSXR1000 straight away and hasn't crashed or even gotten a ticket since then and he is now 22. I do have to add he goes through tires and front fork seals at an alarming rate.

Yeah, but does this describe your ex?

Quote:
claims he doesn't need to be geared out because he needs to show off his tats and how much he's been working out lately, claims he cant get a 600 or 250 because a 1000 + tats+working out= a chick magnet,
It's not about the bike. It's about the attitude.

TBH the OP's brother sounds like Meathead Rob Lowe

People are gonna do what they are gonna do... He watched those "first ride last ride on a SS" vids on YouTube or seen all the pics of the dude that's insurance bought half the bikes at the dealership before guy even left the parkinlot ???

Hopefully he has sense an learns to ride... May he be ever safe out there.
You may have got the brains in the family... Congrats

I don't get it, but for some reason the extra insurance doesn't really apply to me. My insurance company quoted me LESS for an 08 cbr600rr than my 13' ninja 300.
Even though the book value of the cbr is higher... it's really odd. I didn't ask about liter bikes, although i'm curious.

I still can't determine if this is a serious thread but there is some good stuff in here.

Which just goes to show we are all different.

Some 50 year olds still don't have the maturity to ride a liter bike. Others have the maturity to do so in their teens. The key here is to take personal responsibility for the real extra risks involved for an inexperienced rider.

If you can look yourself in the mirror and say, "I know I can do this responsibly, with the admitted greater risks involved", I say have at it. I can't say that I'd make the same decision, but people get away with lot of things I wouldn't do.

Tell him that a literbike is no guarantee that girls will talk to you. Ask me how I know. (No one of the... female gender talks to me just because I ride one.)

.
I left out the part that my son has been riding a motorcycle since he was 3 years old. Actually two but he was close to turning 3.

I believe it's experience, not maturity, that matters (as I look in the mirror).

Ha! Fair enough. In reality, I am in the same immaturity boat.

Burnouts and wheelies?! lol.

Whenever a new rider asks me for advice on what kind of bike to start with I just tell them the pros and cons of each bike, suggest they wear gear, and then let them decide on their own. I'd like to imagine that if someone is told that starting on a 1000cc is dangerous and then they do it anyways that they know what they are getting themselves into.

The kind of girls that are going to be attracted to what he's trying to look like won't know the difference between a 250, 650, 600 or 1000. If they're dumb enough to like a guy simply for the surface image he puts off they're dumb enough to believe a 250 is a liter bike.

Tell him to buy a 250 and pay for his next girl's boob job with the money he saves.

Quite seriously a 600 would be all he needs if he must have a race bike with blinkers. (I'm not a SS/Liter bike hater.....just think new guys should have a sensible perspective before buying them....heck I want one).
