My first bike is a 300, I don't regret my decision. In my opinion, the 300 is a better all around bike, which is why I went for that over the 250. People may say that you will drop it, but that never bothered me, things can get fixed, it's not the end of the world. I've dropped it a few times and still don't regret buying new. New also means that you know that no one else has messed with your bike, since you're the first owner.

You may want to ask yourself though, do you plan on keeping this for a long time, or do you have your eyes set on another bike? If you have your eyes set on another bike, then maybe a 250 would be a better choice.

If you can afford it there is no reason not to get the 300.

Go with the 300 for sure, better technology, less maintenance and less prone to carburetor problems since the 300 is fuel injected! Go for the new if you can, the power is a little more but nothing that will get you in trouble.

I got a 300 for my first bike and it barely has two scratches on it... No regrets here, well besides that I regret it didn't come in all green when I got mine

I had a 250 and now have a 300

get a 300

seat is 30.5" with the 250 and 31" with the 300

but the seat is a bit narrower on the 300 so basically the same.

If you have the funds i would say go for the 300. I've had a newgen (08-12) and now the 300.

Edit: Al beat me to it.

Then get a 250. It is a very good bike and I would have kept mine, if I could have.

I got mine to 97 mph on a GPS. it goes plenty fast: faster then your average sedan from a stop to 60mph. but at highway speeds it is equal to your average economy car.

It will get the job done.

you dont have to get a 300 new. I got mine used for 4k with no miles. I'm sure cheaper ones can be found. Just go with what you like better.

Hmmm, first bike, relatively new street rider, limited budget.... buy a 250 outright. Learn a season or two, sell it for close to what you bought it for and then buy the bike you want when your job is settled.

I'm a new rider with a 250, which I got because I didn't want payments on a toy I wasn't sure I'm going to play with.
Now since I got to ride it a little I'm sure in two things:
- I'm going to play with this toy
- It was a very good decision.
If money is tight get 250: they can be found really cheap. I paid just over 2k for a 2011 SE with two hundred miles on the clock.
