Tachometer not working or going crazy
Hey this site is really useful and has answered most of my ninjette questions but a search hasnt really found an answer to my current problem.
My tachometer sometimes just sits at zero rpm even though the engine is revving properly. At other times whilst at speed, it'll move past the redline and fluctuate between 7000rpm to past red line. The engine rpms are fine. If i blip the throttle, the tacho will jump 4000rpm even though in reality it only increases a little. Any idea what is wrong or what can be done to fix this?? Many thanks in advance! |

Has it been raining recently? Sounds like water has gotten into the tach and causing the power or ground to go crazy. It happened on my bike. Dry it out and it should return to normal.

Yeah it has been raining. It dried out today and worked normally for most of the ride, but at one stage i noticed that the tacho did not work at all. it just sat at 0rpm. could this mean a new battery is needed?

My old 92 did this. New battery and cleaned terminals and problem was solved. Not sure which fixed it for me. Check yours and let us know please.

My tachometer has acted like that when I ran the battery completely dead and pop-started it and it has acted similarly when condensation formed inside.

Your symptoms and remedy may lie in here- http://www.ninjette.org/wiki/Battery
"- if your lights on the Ninja 250 begin to flicker or your gauges or engine speed start to act erratically, check your battery connections" You also may want to check your tach connections. |

Bump for this...
Ive been experiencing this for the past few rides. I got worse today almost to the point where the throttle no longer worked. I noted that in neutral the light was not super bright green, more like a dull green. So i bumped my butt on the seat to hit the battery and the neutral green turned bright again. It did this intermittently till I got home. I popped the seat off to discover the ground terminal screw was loose. I tightened it up and hopefully it shall fix my problem. |

Tighten it with a socket or wrench; not just a screwdriver. Loose battery connections cause all kind of ills, and it's not uncommon for them to rattle loose if not torqued properly.
