Greetings from Nairobi, Kenya

Hi Unregistered,

My name is Brian and I'm the proud owner of an ex-USA 2009 Ninja 250R Special Edition. I bought it through a local (Kenyan) company that deals in new and used bikes from the USA.

I just started riding this week, mostly commute from house to work. I have learnt a lot from this list and hope to continue to learn some more.

Safety gear in Kenya is very expensive, but I've managed to get a good helmet, knee pads, gloves and some used boots - picking up a Joe Rocket textile jacket today.

Here's a pic I took just before my first ride a couple days ago, the bike is replacing the yellow car in the background, my fuel-guzzling 2.4l Mitsubishi Airtrek :

Congrats on the bike. And you just so happen to have the sexiest color scheme that is available for the 250's

You look just like Obama's brother, Brian. Any relation? That gear must feel great with the cooler temperatures there.

Thanks all of you for the warm welcome. The Joe Rocket jackets available didn't have my size so I settled for a Dayglo Yellow First Gear Mesh Rush Jacket.

Did a short (10 kilometer) ride with ATGATT today and felt very comfortable.

Riding in Kenya is picking up - every weekend bikers in Nairobi get together and go out on exciting road trips - I follow these via the "Kenya Bikers Club" Facebook page. I've been invited to join them on trips a couple times but I don't feel ready yet - would like to develop much more confidence, familiarity and correct reflexes before I set out on a long trip.

As for the weather here - the coldest it gets is around 11 degree celsius, most of the year round it's quite temperate.

We've just started the short rains season but I'm hoping to get lucky and not get caught out with the bike in too much rain

Trying to avoid group rides and rainy days during your first weeks is wise.

Nice one Jiggles - but on a serious note, I dislike these stereotypes. There's a member of Ninjette.org who had a helment and jacket in Kawasaki green - and was ready to sell them to me - until he heard that I'm from Kenya. Even despite the fact that I was going to use the guy who sold me the bike (lives in Boston, MA) to pay for, received the shipment and bring the gear - the guy arrived in Kenya Thursday this week and is a serious bikehead, basically quit his job to set up his bike dealership business http://www.motoadvkenya.com

Anyway - c'est la vie.... *sigh*

Wishing you all the best in finding your prince

Eh, I wouldn't want to deal with international transactions that weren't from a reputable company. Just a few weeks ago one member on here from India got scammed out of something he ordered. There's just zero accountability so its understandable.

Yes, that is understandable - I have bought a lot of stuff of eBay and off online shops and have been lucky enough not to get scammed. There are ways of establishing whether you're dealing with a credible seller/buyer - but most of the time when my gut tells me to back off - I always drop the deal

That was unfortunately me, and it was a "friend's friend's friend" who scammed me... And honestly I have no one to blame but myself, for even sending it there.. Ahh well, s**t happens...

Honestly, there is nothing you can do about it. As the saying goes, one rotten fish can spoil the pond. So a few misguided people can ruin the name of an entire nation/nations/culture. For example, in the year I spent in the UK I tried selling one of my phones on the eBay and 5 different times it was bought by 5 different scammers from countries ranging from Nigeria to Latvia. Eventually a guy contacted me off eBay and bought it from me... This is apart from the millions of emails I get telling me of the millions I've won from lotteries I've never taken part in...
