Cost of 600 Mile Service
My local dealership quoted me $ 470.00 plus parts for the 600 mile service. Is this what I should expect to pay for this service?

No, the 600mi service is a glorified oil change, you can do it yourself for about $30. It requires checking fluid levels and bolts and changing the oil. And $470 from the dealer is ****ing crazy, I've been quoted in the $200s for it which is still insane. You're basically only paying for labor and it shouldn't take more than 1-2hrs

Thanks for the responses. $ 470.00 seems crazy for a service. I may need to try to do this one myself.

if you are not familiar with doing the work on the bike research and think everything through before you dig in so you can hopefully see flaws in your plan before they happen.
You can always call around some other dealers and look for a lower quote if you are not comfortable doing it all yourself. good luck either way |

I've never worked on anything mechanically and managed to do all of the maintenance on the bike (minus the valve adjustment) by myself, with the help of the abundance of tutorials and help from this forum.

I paid $200 at dealer, You CAN'T DO IT YOURSELF if the bike is financed and under warranty. after that you can do all of the rest of check up's and oil changes yourself. If you don't take it to a dealer for 600 mi service it will void your warranty. Look it up

Now it is true that they can deny a warranty claim if they can prove that you neglected or ****ed up the service that you did. I.e. engine seized because you never changed the oil. Here is kawasakis warranty faq, go ahead and point out to me where it says it will void your warranty if you don't take it to a Kawi dealer for the first 600mi http://www.kawasaki.com/helpcenter/h....aspx#service2

TIL my stealership is ripping me off. Unless you have lots of disposable income, regular motorcycle maintenance can be crushing. Get a factory service manual, and with the help of the DIYs here, and others, learn to do a majority of it yourself. You'll save thousands over the life of your bike (and fairly quickly).

they can probably eek themselves out of replacing a chain if they can prove that the way you maintained it caused the failure, or that you incorrectly changed your oil so you starved your bearings. same thing with modifying a bike or a car. You can do whatever you want to it, as long as the modification isn't the cause of the failure. you put on engine mods and blew a transmission... maybe, but they have to prove it wasn't a manufacturing defect. there are landmark rulings out there for this stuff. manufacturers and dealers are well aware of this. if they tell you otherwise, you need to talk to someone else who actually understands the way the world works. |

a full service is going to cost me 380 (including all parts they said) so 470 is just insane.
I did the oil change myself. I had a slight issue with the bolt (and had to order a new bolt) but still, much cheaper than taking it to the dealership. |

when something goes wrong and kawasaki doesn't want to pay up because you didn't follow their warranty policies, you really want to have a litigation fight for months, possibly years, with them. They are not known for their wonderful customer service. I have been waiting for 3 1/2 months for a tach from them on warranty and that is with them saying it is something that is their fault. Just sayin that $200 is a small price to pay to stop a future headache
