Pray before riding?

This is kind of a serious question but a good one to ask. How many of you pray before you go on a long ride, or just a regular ride for that matter? I am getting into a time in my life where I am trying to do what I can do reaffirm my love for Jesus, and once I do get my bike I feel I will be praying every time I go on a ride. Seeing as how death could come from any direction (even though someone could say that even walking out your door, or just getting out of bed is dangerous) and most drivers in the world are idiots. I understand if you don't wish to answer if this is a personal issue with you, it would just be nice to see more people go to Heaven than Hell.

Be safe out there and remember that God is Good.

I pray, but I'm not sure it is to the god you do, does that mean I won't be going to heaven?

I just recently started riding and my parents gave me this for my 18th birthday and I always ride with it on the inside pocket of my jacket.
I'd like to think it keeps me safe.

I generally do if I remember. I'm kind of at a point in my life where I'm not sure how I feel about God or religion, but being raised in a family that went to church every Sunday and Wednesday, I figure it can't hurt.

Nope, just do my safety checks and go riding. Don't believe in deities.

Only thing religious i have is the St. Christopher medallion in the Icon vest. Doesn't bother me so i haven't cut it out.

I don't pray every time I throw my leg over it, but I always do when heading out on a long trip. None of us can be sure when our life will end, but we can be sure about being ready to face what's next.

It's important we do all the things we should for our safety. Your religious convictions or lack thereof are personal. Ride safe and ride often.

If I prayed I would be a hypocrite. I try to convince myself to ride safely, and do not do stupid stuff, before most rides.

Some track day orgs do a group prayer at the end of the riders meeting. Participation is optional of course. To answer the question though, I personally do not.

Thumbs up Yes to all the above

Being responsible to do all safety checks (Tire pressure, etc.), regular practice to keep your skills fresh, in a big parking lot, all your tight turns and maneuvers around possible road obstruction, slamming on the brakes so you know what your bike will do, etc. - BUT my prayer before every ride is "To be seen and to see everyone on the road; To not be lazy in my thinking, but alert for all situations; For the road to be clear of obstructions (gravel, etc.), and most of all to be relaxed and have fun.

To the original poster, consider leaving out the Heaven and hell part as this is what turns people off to being open to a relationship with God. Been studying Ancient Hebrew where a few words (that can change a whole concept) have been lost in translation in our modern bibles (i.e. eternity). Tradition of Men (Religion) interpret Heaven and hell as "A Place somewhere else," and if you just read the words on the page, it will look like that - but everything is a parable. Hell can be right here, if you make certain decisions that take your life into a state of trial (hence people state, I"m going thru hell"), which is good because is burns off (if you will) you making that decision again. Consider reading "Love Wins," by Rob Bell (A believer but not a religious book, but a great book of questions sold at regular book stores. Religious book stores won't carry it).

Sorry Alex. I know this is not a religious blog and am sure you may flag it. Couldn't resist giving a little perspective. Any replies probably should go through our personal profile. Much love and safety to all.

Sure, if you consider "when the helmet drops the bullshit stops" mantra to be a prayer. Otherwise I'm an atheist so no, just the usual safety checks.

I see a prayer as just one of many ways to get your mind in a certain state, focused on riding in this case. If prayer is what works best for you - do it. Whatever you do, so long as you stay focused and safe.

Also, reminds me of this:

I'm atheist, and this is one of the reasons why. Believing the words in some book doesn't make one person better than another.

Fearing Hell shouldn't be a reason to be a good person. I try to be a good person, because that's the right thing to do. A higher power won't protect you on a motorcycle; but gear and intelligent riding might (IMHO, of course).

I give a short prayer before most rides, I believe he does protect us on a daily basis weather we are aware of it or not. There is gentlemen at church who tells me every time I see him how irresponsible I am for putting myself in danger by riding a motorcycle, A father with two little girls can't do things like that. I just smile and let him know if the good lord sees fit to call me home I'm going home.... that's that.

I'm Pagan - if I took the time to pray to all those gods I'd never get out of the driveway.

But, being brought up in a baptist household where "god helps those that helps themselves" was constantly preached, I think you might be better served by taking it into your own hands to check over your bike before a ride rather than handing your safety over to some perceived omnipotent being.

T-CLOCS - learn it, live it, you'll be better off for it.

I just drove round Kamehameha HW Oahu, soooo many churches.

I have no problem with people being whatever religion they want to be, I just don't want to hear about it.

I never tell people i'm an atheist until religion is mentioned, in europe atheism is very much the norm, life without god is great, you learn to be able to assign thanks and blame correctly, it's not gods will I got myself an awesome car, or a nice holiday to hawaii, it's my hard work and effort that got me everything I have.

Yup...pray before I race, drive, etc. Prayers are for others first then myself.

I thank God for this sport, and for allowing me to enjoy it this long. I feel sorry for the angels assigned to protect me cuz I know they have to work double time guarding my crashing bun! LOL

I sport His words on my leathers:

Nope...it's a reminder all things are Nexx(t) to God. In other words, He is second to none. He>I

Seriously, if you want to argue about science at least make an effort to learn the topic.

Also, his claims about no junk in software are soooooooo far from truth it's not even funny - I have to deal with that junk on daily basis and it's a pain in the ass.

You know what's the difference between me and you? You don't believe in just one less deity than I don't believe in, among all those hundreds of deities out there. So again, please believe what you want to believe, just stop waving you religion around and shoving it down people's throats.
