Trading for a scooter

Backstory:

Yesterday morning, I stopped at the gas station after leaving work to plunk $5 into the tank. As Neener happily accepted her drink, a guy calls from the other pump "Mine takes even less than that" with a grin. An employee at the gas station, he rides a little scooter, a 250. He is an interesting individual. Overweight, probably 28 or 29, and socially awkward. He almost seems like he is very mildly handicapped. I am not making fun of anyone, just the first impression. So anyway, we chat about the great gas mileage we get on 2 wheels for a minute before I ride off into the sunrise.

Fast forward to 10PM tonight, I am on my way to work, I stop at this same gas station for drinks and snacks. Coincidentally, Larry (scooterboy), is out cruising around and was there when I pulled in. As I come out of the store, he spots me and tosses his keys to me. "Take her for a spin around the parking lot. See what you think of my scooter!" I laugh and hand him back the keys mumbling something about having to get to work.

Don't get me wrong, I would ride the little scoot just for the hell of it. But 2 things stop me. First, I've never ridden a scooter and have no idea what to expect. If I dropped the scooter... Well, that would be embarrassing to say the least. Second, if I scoot his scooter, I'm kind of obligated to let him test the ninja. I just don't think I'm comfortable with that ya know? I almost took the Csmith "Life by the Horns" approach to it but can't bring myself to do it.

Opinions? Remarks? Jives? lol I kinda wanna test ride a scooter. come at me bro

Come to think of it, that's pretty much the response I got when I offered an acquaintance a spin on my first Ninja. It makes more sense to me now than it did then; after all the effort I've put into the hobby.

if someone hands you the keys to their vehicle and tells you to drive it around the parking lot... ffs man, drive it around the parking lot.

also, i would not let anyone ride my motorcycles who doesn't already own a motorcycle. scooters are automatics. they don't count.

I think it'd be fun to putter around on a scooter, but test riding someone else's? Who isn't a close friend? Naw, pass.

I'd feel like crap if I dropped it and wouldn't know how far they'd fly off the handle if their ride was damaged. Yes I would pay but I wouldn't know if they are sue happy.

Plus yeah the whole "My baby, no one rides her but me," thing. Close friend who I could trust to be responsible and mature, sure. Random person? Nope nope.

Aw, scooters aren't all that bad. When I was living in a small beach town in Mexico, I had a little Honda 50cc scooter. They are actually very practical if you are just making short trips to the beach or the local stores at slow speed: there's room for a bag of groceries or a helmet under the seat, it got 125 miles to the gallon, super reliable, cheap for service or parts, and when it's raining your lower legs are actually kept dry by the footboards.

The only problem is that, at least with 50ccs, they are absolutely gutless and incredibly slow. I think the top speed was 60KPH (35 mph) all out. If I were to get a scooter now, I wouldn't get one smaller than a 250.

If someone offered to let me ride their bike, I wouldn't feel obligated to let them ride mine. Unless they said, 'here, ride my bike, and then I want to ride yours.'

Two wheelers are like golf clubs. No ONE is the best for every occasion. I own three bikes. One is for long out of town cruises. One (Baby Ninja) is for general schnitz-n-giggles. And honestly the most ridden is my Honda 110 Elite scooter.

The scoot has massive underseat storage (and I added a trunk), gets 100+ mpg. Has no trouble at all in urban traffic, capable of around 60 mph. (the target streets have speed limits no higher than 45, so lots of cushion).

No clutch, no shifting. Point and shoot. Busy, crowded roads?. Alleys, parking lots, and other sneaky ways around are easy.

Water cooled, fuel injected, an handles like a razor blade on ball bearings. The only real objection is the rear shock is a pogo stick. Other than that, pure happiness.

Maybe some day. Most strangers who take the time to stop and say hello don't stay strangers to me. It'll be a while before I trust someone on my Nenette

If you go scooter think Suzuki Burgman They run from 125 to 650 with 250 and 400 variants.

I love my scooter. It's my only two wheel transportation at this stage. It's a 50cc Aprilia Scarabeo. Gets 80 mph and will go 50mph on flat ground. I love it. It has had a dead battery for two years. I kick start it and go. It has a back box that will hold groceries. It has a hook up front that will hold four blue bags at my knees. It's super comfortable. My longest ride was 300 miles.
And there is no tag. So setting off speed camera lights is a hobby.
