WERA - North Central

Anyone race 250/600 class in this region? I am thinking about it next season as it will put me at Mid-Ohio and maybe the new KY track. Basically, tracks I want to race on but last I heard, the grids were kinda small.

Next season's schedule
North Central Region
5/2-3 Grattan Raceway Park, Grattan, MI-c,rs,V,
6/19-21 WERA Cycle Jam at Road Atlanta, Braselton, GA-V,
6/27-28 Pittsburgh Int'l Race Complex, Wampum, PA-rs
TBA Vintage Motorcycle Days, Mid-Ohio, Lexington, OH-V, (limited classes and age limit)
TBA Mid Ohio Sports Car Course, Lexington, OH-DH,rs,
8/15-16 NCM Motosports Park, Bowling Green, KY-DH,rs (pending track certification)
8/22-23 Grattan Raceway, Grattan, MI-cc,DH,rs,
9/5-6 Pittsburgh Int'l Race Complex, Wampum, PA-DH,rs,

Looks like June would be a tough travel month too.

Not many 250s at all up north, you have to come south for the big ESS grids!

I just started racing with CCS. I'm interested in WERA too. But I hear the grids for the 250s are just as small there as with CCS. Florida seems to be where it's at for the ninjettes on the east coast.

CCS is at NJMP two weekends next year.

CCS?

edit: I'm a dumbass, championship cup series

btw, what does it take (skill wise) to qualify for any of these racing divisions?

For club level racing (which is where you should start) is easy. Just take their race clinic or acceptable clinic from another org. It's not much really, just some classroom time and some on track coaching to ensure you're not a total goofball and will not cause a safety issue. You can pass it without fuss, most of it is race protocol, flags and boards. The riding part is what you should be doing anyways... So when they take you out on track, just do what you know.

You're not fast yet, but hey man... near nobody is fast there first time out so don't let it hold you back, everyone starts somewhere. Some will say, do some more track days before getting into racing. I somewhat agree, but I can't say it honestly... I did my first race on my first track day.

Your first race should be about finding your 100%, not riding above it and to have fun no matter what place you come in, just don't expect to win. There is so much more to learn, so don't crash out your first couple of races. Anyway, some orgs have a "provisional" (probation) time period, you have to race without crashing for a number of races before they will give you a full race lic.

I take it CCS and WERA are a step above club racing?

Sirref, Motorcycle Xcitement and MAARC do the racing school. I think you've done track days with Roger Lyle before. Just like csmith says, it's a track day with class time. And at the end of the day, you have a mock race. As long as you pass your written exam (multiple choice) and don't crash during the mock race, you will be eligible for your race license. If you take the class at Summit Point Main, do it with MAARC. The experience is a little better. There is no crazier feeling than going by an ambulance on the track at full throttle. :-)

I took the class on a whim this year and it was the best decision I could have made. Racing is so much fun. And it is humbling. It's very different than a track day. So much so that you will have to have a different mindset. But I can't say enough about the experience.

No way I'm ready for doing any of this but are these good spectator events? Some of the guys at work and I are looking for a place to watch races. Wampum is an easy ride for all of us.

This sounds badass, like extremely badass. I was thinking I'd do it with Roger Lyle or TPM but you just sold me on MAARC for the experience.

Do y'all think it would be worth it for someone around an I group track pace to do or should I just focus on the techniques more and get up to an A group track pace?

Mid-Ohio isn't too far from butler co. I think that and beaver run are the closest tracks to you. Mid-O is a fantastic track and it's a great venue to watch races as a spectator as well. Beaver run is a smaller track that would make a great home track for you.

Come to a Sunday MotoSeries race day at Beaver (Pitrace).

Things to do;
Watch the races
Watch the drift cars on the skid pad
Race go carts
Walk around the paddock and see all the cool bikes
Sit down with riders and have chat and bunch of laughs
Make some new friends

Price: $0 dollars

Mid-Ohio for the AMA vintage and superbike weekends
Price: about $100

Don't worry about your pace. I was in a class of mostly Intermediate group riders (me included). After the class and your first race, your pace will increase without you even knowing it. It happened to every person that took the class with me. It's pretty funny how racing changes your mindset on the track.

And I highly recommend MAARC. Try and do Memorial Day weekend if you can at Summit Point. I took the class that day in 2014, and there were 10 people there, which is a lot. Hopefully, this year will be the same. Let me know when you decide to do it. I'll more than likely be there if the weather isn't crappy.
