Carb cleaner brand suggestions?

Does anyone have any suggestions of what brand of carb cleaner to use?

Thanks,

Chevron Techron Concentrate at 1oz per gal is my favorite. Was recommended to me by a Mechanical Engineer that works in the auto emissions industry. He was impressed by its cleaning ability. He's not easily impressed.

EDIT: Or did you mean carb dip? I have some of the old Gunk Carb Dip, before they changed it. I hear Yamaha sells a good one. Haven't used any others, but they ain't what they used to be from what I hear.

for Chevron been using it since the 80s or Seafoam.

If a carburetor is already working and your RDI it, the can-o-cleaner is fine.

i employ WalMart spray bombs and Berrymans dip to selectively augment compressed air, soda blast and heated ultrasonic....application and use depends on exactly what part and its specific condition.

Using spray bomb along with a strong compressed air source is highly recommended.

Spray bomb used alone... the puny spray stream alone just doesn't suffice and should not be interpreted as "compressed air source" in any sense.

As far as the type that you add to your gas, it does. The good stuff (Techron) does more than clean the fuel system. It cleans deposits from the intake valves and combustion chamber. Injectors too if you are Fuel Injected.

I run a tank with Techron once per season. I have heard of lower-strung engines, like the Honda CBR250R, getting significant carbon build-up in the combustion chamber when ridden gently, not revved, or consistently lugged. Eventually the carbon causes detonation and engine damage.

I should have been more specific...

I am taking my carbs off the bike and taking apart to clean. I am not too familiar with dipping it. Would this be just dipping the whole thing or just pieces?

Pieces. You need to completely disassemble the carbs, remove all gaskets, etc. before dipping.

The one problem with "dipping" is some brands are not rubber, or plastic friendly, remember those O-Rings that are in the fuel rail between the carburetors? Fuel inlet elbow?

If the carburetors are functional, then a can-o-cleaner PLUS air compressor should be fine, if the carburetors are non-functional then it's an ultrasonic cleaning, plus air compressor.

As long as you have them apart, I would recommend changing out the consumables, float valves, idle mixture screw O-rings, fuel bowl O-rings etc....

PM @ducatiman he sells rebuilding kits and includes stainless steel allen heads screws.

Completely dissemble the carbs, set the diphrams to the side, soak all metal parts in carb cleaner, order a rebuild kit (I reccomend one with fuel mixture screws) and optionally order new jets, use compressed air and compressed carb cleaner to make sure all carb passageways are clear, reassemble carbs and be careful with the diphrams.

I saw the youtube videos where people look in their engines with one of those snakey camera things (boroscope? Too lazy to google) and there was no carbon guck in them afterward. If Techron's cheaper I'll buy it next time.

Plus 1 for techron. I have pulled the head off cars that used techron. Old cars bought second hand. The new owner used techron. I could see it starting to dissolve years of build up.

It's not cheaper, probably about 4 or 5 times as much.

There are a couple different Techron products - Techron Concentrate and Techron Fuel Injector Cleaner. You want the concentrate. It's usually around $8 to $10 for the 12 oz bottle, more for the 20oz, but a better deal usually. The F.I. cleaner is at Costco for $12 for 6 bottles (probably 12 oz). The concentrate is the one to use if you are interested in removing deposits from the valves and combustion chamber.

I've used Seafoam as well, but feel that Techron Concentrate is the superior cleaner if you are interested in removing deposits.

O'Reilly Auto Parts has Techron Concentrate on sale at times. After winter I always run a tank through each vehicle.

++1 on Berrymans. I've even used the liquid in the fuel tank to clear the beginnings of build up in the carbs. And, if the issues aren't too bad, it can be sprayed directly into the pilot jet hole while the engine is running to help clear the pilot circuit w/o removing carbs. I've done this on my V4 bikes. Not confident it can be done on the Ninjette. I just mentioned it as a testimony to the usefulness of Berrymans.
