I do know and us KY peeps don't be makin' a fuss about things like how others talk and all...
My last trip to CA had me in the boarder patrol office more nervous than a long tailed cat in room full of rocking chairs.

Respect is fear of the known... Used to defend is a "dog bites man" story, in other words, normal and not news worthy. Used to intimidate, rob, rape, murder... is a "man bites dog" story, news worthy. I will relay a personal experience with a friend from church. Very much a "surface" anti-gun person. I say "surface" because her opposition to firearms was very much what she read in the news, saw on TV, heard about in TIME magazine. I invited her to come over to my grandmothers farm to just shoot one Sunday after church. .22LR plinking at some water filled coke cans. 9mm hand guns... .357 Mag hand guns. 20ga pump action Remington shot gun. by the end of the day she was shooting my .30-06 Springfield She started learning all the safety precautions (started, because learning all of it is a life long process). Her fear of recoil and loud noises went from unknown to "known". She told me at the end of the day, she would never have used the words "fun" and "gun" in the same sentence until she went to the range with me. I wish you were near enough to spend a day on the range. Not saying I would change your mind, but certainly would would give you a new perspective, and something to think about. There are two stages, the first is where terror gives way to respect... and the second is when respect breeds confidence. When you know you hold the ability to protect your life, yourself, in your hands, you have more respect for yourself and those you love. The reason the article talks about motorcycles and guns going hand in hand, is because both are dangerous, and both are seen by the non-gun and non-motorcycle community as unneeded and unnecessary. Danger, death, dismemberment with no real good coming from it. Remember your mom's opposition to motorcycles? To those of us who ride... and those of us who carry, we know exactly the offset between good and danger. We accept it and we disagree with those who poo poo us.

I figure I'll chime in. There are only 3 places I won't concealed carry carry. Those are airports, government facilities, and hospitals other than that it goes with me everywhere. People may disagree with this next statement but guns by themselves aren't dangerous. Now you may be thinking wtf is this kid smoking? But just wait a minute. Does a gun point itself at someone and pull the trigger? No, does a gun draw and point itself at someone in order to intimidate or instill fear? No. People do those things. I've been carrying since I was 21 (I'm 25) I have NEVER had to draw my weapon and I hope i never will. The ONLY reason(s) my weapon leaves its holster is for storage/cleaning or if I/an innocent person is about to lose there life. Also, PA doesn't require you to reveal to an officer you are holstering a concealed firearm until the officer asks you directly. I have had multiple encounters with officers and never once revealed to them I was carrying.
I don't draw because some jackass cut me off, I don't draw because I want to "show off" my firearm, or any of those stupid reasons. I am an avid supporter of concealed carry because its the only way to truly protect yourself. With that being said even carrying a gun doesn't 100% ensure your safety. *.02 added* *puts down phone and walks to the fridge for a beer* |

Intimidation can be a powerful defence, even organised criminals didn't like putting up a fight when a group of lads with automatic rifles were backing up the police You can't spend much from a coffin. As it goes with riding and many other things in life, the best offense is a strong defence.

My own personal American ignorance believed that 'aboot' was not a Canada-wide thing, but a weirdness isolated to Newfies or some other eastern Canadian population.

There's 6 regional accents in Canada: Newfie (it's a stretch calling it English! Lol!) Eastern Canada (Nova Scotia, PEI, New Brunswick), Toronto & lesser so Ontario, Western Canada, the North and Quebec. I find it fairly easy to hear the difference. By the way; most Canadians say about: ab+out. And yes; aboot is more a Newfie pronunciation.

@allanoue - I've seen that before. It made me cringe so bad: IIRC he created a salad of straw-man arguments, appeals to emotion and presented misleading information in order to support his immoral position on weapons.
Politically charged comedy often makes me cringe even if I agree with the comedians conclusions, because the comedian has the power to make bad arguments which amount to nothing more than sophistry, but you're not aloud to call them out on it because "it's just comedy mate: I was just havin' a laugh. No need to take it serious." Those that are unaware of that sophistic trick, are vulnerable to a very powerful form of propaganda; that being: messages, conclusions, statements and value judgements which you are not permitted to defend against. Yuc.
