Knowing when to bite your tongue
This should be an interesting thread. We are normally very open to giving our 2cents when needed, but what I am asking is... what causes you to bite your tongue?
Subjects/conditions given when keeping your mouth shut is the best course of action; Knowns; Rip threads Crashing Elders or more experienced riders chatting about very complex subject matter. What else keeps you pie hole shut?

^^^ probably not enough lol - but in all fairness and reality it is a lot about looking at whatever I think about posting and trying to make sure it is respectful and contributes something. If it doesn't, chances are I need to keep it shut.

Politics. I've got no interest in getting into one of those debates on the internet. No thanks.
Baiting/trolling. I should keep my trap shut more often on these than I really do... Men vs Women debates. Doesn't matter if it's vehicle control skill or domestic roles. Inevitably someone makes a sexually charged rude comment and it goes down from there. Never stays professional very long. |

nah... Just some posts cause some of us to write up a whole reply and then cancel or never post it. There is not right or wrong answer here, just personal preferences.

What causes me to shut up?
My wife, when she gives me "the look." My boss, ditto. Pretty much any overheated, idiotic absolutist "debate" that isn't worth my time. Extreme views based on the echo chamber (e.g. anyone who swallows everything Fox News spouts without question; anyone who swallows everything MSNBC spouts without question). Any discussion demonizing other points of view. Being an adversary is healthy. Being an enemy is not. There's a difference... In this country the parties used to be adversaries. Now they're enemies. That's a very bad thing. Any discussion that interprets "equality" as "special treatment." I DON'T CARE whether your plumbing is on the inside, what Pantone shade your skin is, what language you speak, which disabilities you've got, or what floats your boat in the bedroom. Since everyone else gets celebrated for their own particular thang, I'm campaigning for Middle-Aged, Middle-Class, Straight White Guy Rights. And I want my own MAMCSWG Pride Parade. So there. I also firmly believe that religion and politics are not fit topics for polite conversation. I have my views. They probably aren't yours. So let's just move along... nothing to see here.

I have a theory. It might not be right, but it's kept me married for 29 years.
The Catholics have this concept called "Original Sin." Basically, you're a sinner even before you pop out of your mama's hoohah. Nothing you can do about it. You've always been a sinner, you'll always be a sinner, no matter what you do. Being a husband is just like that. The moment you say "I do," you're wrong. You've always been wrong. You will always be wrong. And whatever happens, it's your fault. The fact that it probably IS your fault -- since, you know, you're a guy, after all -- is beside the point. The sooner you embrace this concept, the happier your marriage will be.

Lately? Repeating myself. Online or IRL, I'm finding if I say something two or three times, I'll stop talking after that. Especially if I get the sense I am not being heard.
Topics over my head. I used to try answering from experience, or call in the wiser person, but meh, pretty much given up unless I really know what I am saying. Religion, politics, rights, etc. Not worth it. Boredom or laziness, even if I know the topic, have an interest in it, or whatever, if I'm bored or lazy that day I won't say anything. This is happening a lot lately. Feeling I'm being a bother (in reality or in my own head). Goes back to number 1, I guess.

It is all about the attitude of the persons discussing a subject or asking a question.
I bite my tongue when I feel that people don't want to hear what I have to say; reason for which it will not be of any help. "For my part I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream." - Vincent Van Gogh "In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing." - Theodore Roosevelt "Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude." - Thomas Jefferson Sometimes, having the best intentions, we try helping a new rider with a simple problem. Then, someone expects you to be an expert on the subject or to use the exact words. Other times, that rider even makes no effort to provide accurate information or prompt feed-back: time for me to keep quiet.

When someone says something that I already know, I've stopped telling them that I already know that. Used to find it kind of insulting but I realized they're just trying to help out a newer rider. I've done a poopload of research and know more than I seem to let on, but I do still appreciate the advice I'm given, and if I stop reading their post, I might miss out on something I don't know.

keep shut when it involves the typical subject matter that just involves spinning wheels. Religion, politics, and global warming
Other than that, anything involving kids or adolescents that I don't agree with like dangerous risky behavior (IMO) and or outcomes of such. Putting kids/adolescent's at unnecessary risk for no true reason especially when they don't fully grasp the risk and when the parent is unable to be the adult and pull back on the reigns and see things for what they are gets my blood boiling just thinking about it now... I've said to much

I try to hold my tongue if I feel someone will get offended or hurt. "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all."
BUT when some people don't follow that and keep dishing it out... sometimes I crack and just speak my mind anyway. The narcissist's dilemma: "They can dish it out, but they can't take it."

politics, religion, etc...
Professors, trainers and friends - I don't talk back and hear them out completely. I will debate to a degree, but as soon as I feel it might escalates I stop. boss, parents, spouse - all 3 most of the time. when I have an out of kitchen pass when I don't: if I feel someone may get hurt or worst -physically. defending those who are not able to defend themselves - or I am bord.

Nahhhhh, talk back to your profs and question them. Their relationship with you, the student, is unique. Sure they're the elder, but they're not your superior. Thei job is to teach, and you can't learn if they don't communicate on a level you can do. You could almost say that they aren't doing their job if you aren't questioning them and discussing. Then again, maybe that's just me being at a small university. I also learn through debate/discussion. And I consider my profs to be friends because we spend so much time with them out of class. Again, small town and small university. You get to know your profs personally and all about their families too.

I went to lunch at the local gyro shop a few weeks ago. Was carrying my Kindle.
Gyro guy: "What'cha reading?" Me: "Oh, a book about physics." (Making of the Atomic Bomb by Richard Rhodes, excellent) Gryo guy: "Let me ask you a question. Prove to me that gravity exists." Me: "Well, Einstein showed that it's a warping of spacetime...." Gyro guy: "Einstein was a fraud! rant, rant, rant...." I backed away slowly.....

Also, the US military throws FLACK out the back of planes that weather persons report as a false positive rain shower. This has been public knowledge for about 40yrs. It was also used as an old cold war era tactic to hide a small recon plane or drop. It kinda went like this... Fly clay duck target out to trigger radar Send high altitude flack drop Recon plane or drop plane hides in flack area that is "thought to be" a pop rain shower. Once you tell someone the crazy whack science that explains what many label as "chem trails", they then dig in deep and then change the subject to HARP. I also know a little about HARP. It serves a specific purpose and has been around for decades, my grandfather (retired NASA) helped design it. And no, its not for creating earthquakes or tsunamis (that is a different system ). Speaking of that, they already know how to flood most of the coastal planet. A well placed large nuke in one of the deeper trenches of the ocean will flood soooooooooooo much area. They already know how to do that.
