You are going to have an extremely difficult time finding any type of knobby or dual sport tire to fit the 16" Ninja rims. You will probably have to convert to 17" front and rear to install the type of tire you are looking for. I browsed through some tires on Revzilla and couldn't find a single 16" tire that would fit a pre-gen....they were all 17" plus.

The other thing to watch out for is that the tire is designed to be tubeless. Many knobbies and dual sport tires are designed to be run with tubes. I think a post-gen wheel retrofit is the way to go.

Absolutely. The new-gen Ninja's come with 17" wheels and there are multiple threads about the conversion here. It's a common practice for racers on the old gen too for a better tire selection.

Wait, may have found something. It's for the rear only though, they don't have a matching 16" front.

The reviews of that tire vary from "so slippery I crashed" to "lasts forever with no issues".

Still looking for a front....

It varies from swapping over the entire front end (forks, wheel, triple clamps) and rear swingarm to custom making a caliper relocation bracket for the front and rear. How deep into this do you want to go??

Here's a thread to give an idea of what's needed. https://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=91825
