Long time lurker / First time poster
I've been lurking here for a long time. This forum helped convince me to buy my 2011 Ninja 250R more than 3 years ago! The unique thing about my bike is that I had it painted in the colors of my alma mater. The University of Michigan. I had it painted to look just like our maize and blue football helmets. I think it's gorgeous. I've gotten much better at riding, but I'm still learning everyday.
I finally decided to join this forum because I am stumped with a few issues about my bike and need your help. This probably needs it own thread but I will preface it here. No matter how much I try, my top speed is 78 mph and I get only 30 mpg!!! Something has to be wrong, right? Your advice is appreciated. |

Welcome,
and I think you are correct, start a new thread. You should be getting 50-60 mpg and a top speed of 95-100 mph (probably higher on the speedometer due to error) But you need fuel, air, compression, and sparc to make an engine run. I'd check the air box and air filter for restrictions. Rodents love to nest in them over the winter. Carbs could be clogged up. Spark plugs could be old and worn out. Or you could have low compression. |

Welcome Noah!
What is the gearing on your bike? From your pic, we look to be about the same size rider. 5' 11''/190lbs fully geared and depending on how you ride it, 30mpg is not all that uncommon for a 250 ridden really hard, but you should be able to reach top speed (100ish).

Noah
I hope someday your coach becomes confident enough with your football team to come to my alma mater for a night game. Happy Valley at night is scary.

The bike is a slavage title, rebuilt at team scream in Round Rock, TX. Would love to get it performing better so I can commit to it for the long haul. Sadly, I am clueless about the gearing |

Gearing is easy peasy...
Your will have to count teeth on your front sprocket and the rear sprocket should have the # of teeth stamped into it. I would expect it to be somewhere between 42 and 47. Stock is 14/45 for your year. If you have stock and getting that low of mpg, then you are either heavy handed or something is wrong.

FWIW, I'm fairly mechanical and I had to clean my carbs 3 times before the bikes finally started running. Just squirting some carb cleaner in them is not cleaning them, you need to disassemble them and make sure all the passage ways are clear, and you need to make sure all the little holes in the jets are clear.
