Not a Ninja, Still Crashed.
https://m.imgur.com/gallery/qKLEG
Welp, low sided my Honda Grom going about 40mph. Question is, I hit my head after I was sliding for a bit already. I don't think I hit it hard, and you can see the helmet in the gallery, but I'm not sure how I feel about the helmet at this point. I'm going to send it to Shoei for inspection, but I'm wondering should I just buy a new helmet anyways? Tough call. UPDATE: I went ahead and just got a new one. http://imgur.com/UZJzZ7e Last futzed with by thisisbenji; June 9th, 2016 at 06:20 AM. |

I'd go with whatever shoei says, if they say its good then its good to wear
if you don't trust it and they say it's good then you should buy a new one and have a spare helmet

I thought conventional wisdom was to replace it if it took a hit. Hopefully Shoei will give you an answer.
You ok? |

It seems to be a minor scratch. Do you feel the fit to be a little looser than before the accident? Can you see any superficial crack? If not, I would keep using that helmet.

Ouch. Sorry to hear about your lowside. If you're sending it to Shoei, I'd just see what they suggest. A long time ago, I know some helmet manufacturers offer crash replacement offers. A discount code to purchase a brand new helmet to replace the one that was in an accident.
Good luck.

I'm guessing Shoei doesn't offer helmet replacement deals.
The foam inside seems okay to me, but I'm going to send it in anyways. Even though I'm going to send it in, I went ahead and ordered myself another RF-1200 for in the mean time. One another note, I can't believe that after spending two seasons on a Ninja 250 and then another three seasons on my FZ6 that I crashed my 125 of all bikes |

Sorry to hear that.
Unfortunately a spot of bad luck can hit anytime. Don't take it to hart. Will insurance cover the damages?

In all seriousness, sorry to hear about the crash, but you should get a straight up yes/no on helmet safety in a report back from the manufacturer.

Bikes 100% mechanically and probably 90% cosmetically so really no reason for insurance. |

Glad you appear to be okay.
I'm not 100% from the picture, but is that dirt rather than abrasion on the swingarm? Good call on the helmet. If you don't trust it, replace it. How's the rest of your gear? Where's the crash narrative? So far I've got corner and lowside, and those were 8 posts apart

As for the crash, I was going into one of my favorite local left hand turns. I usually take the corner in between 45 and 50 mph on my 600. On my Grom I usually take it slower due to cornering clearance issues (I usually shoot for between 35-40 mph). I should note at this point that I don't actually look at my speedometer, I mostly pick entry speed by feel. I should also note that this was basically my first road ride since my previous track day. I approached the corner as normal on the Grom in 3rd gear (redline is at about 50 mph in 3rd, so I couldn't have been going much more than 40mph), I even thought to myself I would take it easy as I was just out cruising by myself. However, probably about halfway way to the corners apex the bike suddenly and without warning tucked the front end before I even got the bike leaned over as far as it should have been. I hit the ground pretty softly, slide for a bit, tried to get up too soon and then rolled once. The Grom slid off onto the shoulder and I just barely made it to the white line on the outside of my lane. I was wearing Dainese Street Runner boots, Dainese kevlar jeans, an Alpinestars leather jacket, Alpinestars full gauntlets, and my Shoei RF1200. I slid on the jeans and jacket, both performed perfectly with no rips or tears whatsoever. I did however get a bit of a friction burn on my arm through the jacket and of course, I knocked my helmet onto the ground when I rolled. After I got up I checked the road surface, it appeared to be perfectly fine, nothing that would have caused the crash. I wasn't on the brakes or gas when I crashed. My theory after talking through it with my fiance is that I simply entered the corner too fast for the OEM bias ply tires as I had just come off a track day on my 600 that's equipped with much stickier rubber. |
