Second, as a Paramedic myself, I can tell you that the status of a persons donation has no relevance on anything that any emergency personnel (EMS, ER RN or ER Physician) do. I've partaken in the organ harvest process. A lot goes in to deciding what can / cannot be taken and it isn't a spur of the moment thing.

For those scared that we will 'do less' when we notice someone is an organ donor, again, wrong. First and foremost, if it's ever found out we withheld something, it's our ass going to jail, and our license being lost. Second, there's no way to tell what is and is not viable without a surgeon cutting you open in the case of a traumatic death. If you were involved in an MVC ('accident') motorcycle or otherwise, and it caused enough damage to cause your death, chances are most of your organs are not usable due to things such as shock, multi-organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS), and other things. Heck, many of the organs are probably "mush" anyhow. Third, if we DO think an organ might be viable, for some reason, we will actually try just as hard with CPR and such. Once the body dies and quits perfusing the organs, it's rather pointless anyhow, isn't it?

New York City has been trialing an organ harvest ambulance. They don't do any actual harvest in the field, but get sent to cardiac arrests for people that are known donors, only AFTER a real ambulance has worked the arrest and decided to call it in the field and stop CPR. They speak with the family and if they are willing to donate still, the patient is put on an automatic CPR machine and transported to a surgical center for evaluation. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/01/nyregion/01organ.html

To be scared that less will be done is a show of ignorance on your behalf, on how laws, ethics and the process truly are. Having said that, my license does not say I'm a donor, but my whole family knows I will donate upon death, and that I do not want to be a vegetable. The best thing for anyone to do is let your family know your wishes before hand.
Thank you very much for clearing that up but I was referring to paramedicts not paramedics - they're two completely different things. (totally kidding)

So if I harvest off my kidney can I get myself a 600...?

A "paramedict" is a paramedic who is sneaking morphine from the med kit. Also known as a "former paramedic".

Next time you renew your license, just tell them to put it on there. Otherwise, valuable time is wasted while they try to contact all your relatives and get a consensus about what to do with them.

Anyone who has ever seen a person in a veggie state probably does not want to be one themselves. Some family members just can't say goodbye and you could end up that way if your wishes aren't expressly known - especially if you have good insurance.

Yes I am, have been for a long time now. My mom doesn't like to talk about it but I hope she will respect my wishes.b

The mother of a very close friend (my second mother) died recently because she needed a liver. They could never find one that was a good enough match. She had hepatitis due to a blood transfusion back in the 60's, before they started really screening blood. It was very hard watching her going through the ordeal of liver, and resulting kidney failure. When I'm gone, if some of my organs can save another family the pain of watching a loved one slowly die, they are welcome to them. Why hold on to things I can't use anymore but that can help someone else so much.

You're aware that you're still alive when they take the organ out of your body and don't think you'll get any anaesthetic - so good luck for yall.

I don't know.... I've heard many people tell me that if you are about to die they'll just let you so they can take the organs. Where as if you are not an organ donor they will try a little harder to save you.

Consider your quality of life, though. Your body is probably pretty wrecked after coming so close to death. At that point, i dont want it anymore and want someone else to have it.

Then i'll make the decision for them to kill me and take my organs... but I want the decision, not have some doctor make it for me.

I am an organ donor. But with all the medical records and obamacare going into action I am a little worried about the security of my medical information.

Someone out there needs an organ and all they need to do is search one of these databases and then kill you.

Kinda worries me. But alas I would not want to let me parts go to waste. I am a proponent of reusing and re-purposing.

I'm assuming none of those people know from personal experience .

Call me naive but not saving a life in order to harvest organs which could save a life seems unrealistic if not illogical. In this country anyway.

Just imagine the conversation "nurse, is he an organ donor? No doctor. Okay then let's save his life." Or "nurse, is he an organ donor? Yes doctor, okay let's let him die and prep for surgery to remove his liver."

Been working as an EMT for a year now.

I have no way of knowing whether or not your organs are usable, nor am I inclined to look though your wallet or ask your family members whether you are a donor because I am too busy trying to gather more important data (age, allergies, meds, history) while transporting you to definitive care.

Neither does the paramedic, he's too busy trying to push fluids into you and prepare a proper report.
Neither does the ER nurse, he's too busy trying to evaluate you and provide/assist needed interventions.
Neither does the ER physician, he's too busy determining the course of treatment and the proper orders to give.
The on-call surgeon might know, he's looking inside of you trying to stop the bleeding. These guys didn't go through 10+ years of school, residency training and fellowships in order to do a ****** job killing someone so that they could sorta kinda save someone else.

Stop misinformation here, now, forever.

I am a donor. I don't buy the BS about them letting you die to harvest organs. Great movie plot but no, it makes no logical sense.

Not sure If I replied here previously... anyway.
I'm not an organ donor because I smoke, bake, occasionally drink and generally do not eat healthy.

Therefore I do not feel it's right I even try to give my organs to anyone else.

If you are an organ donor, I hope your health nuts! As I would not want any other type, than a health nut person, organs given to me.

Food for thought...

When your organs are failing, or have failed, i don't think you would be overly picky about that. Not if saves your life. I know i wouldnt.

Besides, i'm sure they wouldn't use the lungs from a 2 pack a day smoker (or something like that) anyway.

Sorry if came off wrong... I didn't make clear

I actually do not think I would take an organ, as I choose not to donate.

What I meant was more towards those needing organs, would want the 'health nut's' organs over an unhealthy lifestyles organs.

My reasoning, to not donate, is valid to me either way and I stand by it.

I'm gonna play devil's advocate here and say I believe the only people who should be allowed an organ donated is someone who is an organ donor themselves. That would incentives people to do it.

You guys convinced me, I'm going to sign up to be a donor.

I am not going to tell you you have to be a organ donor.
Your reason is bull$hit.

What organs and tissues can I donate?

Organs of the body that can be transplanted include:
•Kidney
•Heart
•Liver
•Lung
•Pancreas
•Intestines

People who are living can donate a kidney or part of the:
•Lung
•Liver
•Intestine
•Pancreas

Tissues that can be donated include:
•Cornea (coating of the eyeball)
•Middle ear
•Skin
•Heart valves
•Bone
•Veins
•Cartilage
•Tendons
•Ligaments

Stem cells, blood, and blood platelets can also be donated.

One person can help up to 50 people.
