City Slicker in the country, big mistake

I am extremely lucky. I was going on a short ride to the beach which is about 11 miles on a back road. I wore my swim trunks and a T-Shirt. My girlfriend was also in beach attire. We are both just a little sore and that is the extent of our injuries.

I am cruising on a backroad cruising at 50 MPH which is 5 above the posted limit. It was a comfortable speed to cruise at. I was coming up on a left handed turn and the truck which is roughly 50 yards ahead of me is braking without a blinker. I slow down with him but not as fast as him so the gap between us is getting smaller as I am braking. I am about 80 feet from him when he makes his left turn so I stop braking and just let the bike roll. He, however, stopped in the middle of the road, more in the oncoming lane than in mine. Then he throws it in reverse which is when I knew I was going to wreck. When I stopped braking and he stopped I was within 30 feet of him, roughly. I slammed the brakes, laid on the horn, and swerved right to avoid him and possibly land in the less abrasive grass. I was about to make it when he backed up, colliding into us at a 45 degree angle. I hit the truck with my shoulder, head, and foot. My girlfriend took most of the impact with her hip.

I landed on the ground but feared my foot was destroyed so I stayed on my face in the grass to see if it was going to start hurting. It didn't so I got up and checked on my girl. She was able to stand up as well. We later went to the ER and they just gave us a Toradol shot and some prescription.

The man said he was trying to turn around to look at a house, but why TF did he not just pull into the driveway on his left. SO MAD yet so thankful we are okay. The officer didn't write a ticket to either of us, just wrote the report and left. The man was kind and offered us help too but we didn't need anything. We walked into the ER about an hour and a half after the incident.

CLIFFS:
-GOING TO BEACH SQUIDLY-I always wear my gear, but the one time I let my guard down.
-WRECKED INTO A BACKING UP TRUCK MID TURN ON A HIGHER SPEED ROAD 45MPH limit
-BRAKED AND SWERVED.-I bled a lot of speed before impact. I was <14 feet from the bike, GF roughly 10
-NO INJURIES

ouch.. hope y'all are doing alright.. sounds like the truck driver wasn't at all aware of his surroundings.. also, I know it's easier to coast when you think you know what a cager is doing, but that's a bad habit, cagers can be unpredictable at times.. thankfully the only real damage was to your ego and to the bike..

Glad you and your girl are ok and doing well and hope you guys recover quickly.
I have found to just stop when in doubt cause people are so unpredictable behind the wheel of a vehicle.

WTF, I was following a dump truck the other day at like 20mph with his left blinker on, he slowed down, stopped, and proceeded to make a right hand turn.

I don't trust trucks AT ALL. Best to stay waaaaaaay back.

Glad you and your bike are okay, is your girlfriend mad?

Isn't that how it always happens? Break our usual good habits and that's when a crash occurs. Internalize it as an easy lesson that could have been much harsher and limit your outings dressed as a squid.

Assumptions are very dangerous for us, Jacques.

Could you tell us how many of those you made for this trip?

I am glad for your good luck.

The girlfriend isn't mad at me because she saw what the ruck was doing as well. It was a bizarre thing and gear is definitely going on for each ride now. She said she's not scared of the bike and she's actually a little sad we can't go riding anymore.

Not even rash. We "bounced" off the truck into the grass which is where I was intending to go. Our left sides are sore and that's it. Besides a few bruises.

Glad you're both okay, that's most important.

That said, I feel bad for your girl. It's one thing for me to take the risk and squid around. I could never ask someone else to.

Upgrading to an R6 after crashing a ninjette is usually said tongue in cheek

Glad you guys are okay. Crap happens and I hope you can get the bike taken care of. Now sure how the law/insurance works for you in this situation as the cop didn't write a ticket.

well fz6 isn't full on r6 so there's that, it's a much better street bike imo. Have fun and post pics when you get it, good luck to your friend on his cheap 250 rebuild

You're completely insane riding at that speed dressed like that. You're not even new to this forum. Maybe you've somehow not seen what road rash looks like? Maybe you should read Brittany's Story. The suffering she went through is about as horrific as I can imagine. I wouldn't wish that level of pain on anyone.

I'm very glad you lucked out and I'm glad you're wearing gear from here on out. The number of riders who have crashed on this forum is huge; it happens. Please recognize that you got incredibly lucky and that the rest of your life and that of your girl friend could have been ruined because you choose to ride without gear.
