Need a new daily...

So my ninjette, dear Putt-putt, decided to take a forceful convalescence, and has put me in need of a new daily driver. I'm frequently in downtown Los Angeles, spend lots of time on southern California's freeways, and am doing more and more distance riding, so I'm looking to get a larger displacement bike.

Primarily I'm looking at Ninja 650Rs and SV 650s, but am open to suggestions. Of course, the dream big bike for now would be a BMW F 650 GS or G 650 GS, but that's not going to happen with my $3k-ish budget at present time.

Anyway, I've been reading up here and there on these two bike, and a few others, and figured I'd ask if anyone here has any input on either of these bikes, or other suggestions. Yeah, yeah, rules are buy an R6, but I think I need a little more fuel economy and lower insurance premium than that would allow.

gen1 ninja 650 or sv650(s) and you'll be good to go

you don't really need to look farther than that, especially for your purposes. Unless you want another 250

Get a SV650.

Moderate weight, good power, excellent mileage (generally better with 2nd gens - 2003 and up w/F.I.)

Everything SV can be found here - www.svrider.com.

An Fz 07 would fit the bill... except you'd have a hard time finding one for less than 4k
so....
+1 on the SV650/ N650

And shush, alex.s !!! I'm already keeping the 250 to turn it into a track bike and stuff, and I did look at Groms and a Ducati, but for my purposes I do think Sirref is right.

Really? I'm pretty sure for me it was comparable to the SV650s. Maybe I am remembering wrong. F4i quote was killer though.

I dont see the point of getting a bigger twin. Id rather just get an older inline 4. Is the insurance gap that much bigger?

If looking at a N650, then a Versys 650 should be in range and I always heard they are better than a N650 (although uglier IMHO). (This is talking about previous gens, not current).

Personally I'd say lean toward the fz6/fz6r (if you want fairings still get an fz6 w aftermarket fairing kit). While the FZ6R is nice, it's lacking a bit in HP compared to naked version (for some odd reason that is unknown).

Honda cbr500r might be something newer you can find near price range...

I was reading nice things about the Versys, but they've all been too tall for me. Womp-womp.

They are under-priced, and rather appealing. Alas, they are also out of my price range, just like the BMW 650 GS. One day. One day.

It takes a very tasteful eye to take dirt bike to a cafe racer, but it's possible.

But then again... this is hot too

fyi... these are the same base bikes. DT250

boy, that's a 250 2 stroke that probably weighs under 200#. straight rear mono... with a kicker. this is like.... beautiful. only thing wrong is the ****** front drum and its missing fenders.

I appreciate it for what it is, which is amazing but I just prefer the aesthetics of the 250 2stroke

To some, its rawness... (no fenders and such) is part of the appeal.
