Well that sucks

Long story short, took the bike for a ride during my lunch break at work. Two big buzzards came out of the tall grass on the side of a FM road while I was moving about 70 mph.

I threw the binders on, but one of them still hit me. Those damn things are much bigger and scarier when they hit your face/chest. And at speed it is quite an impact too. Front started oscillating and down she went.....hard. Full gear but helmet, mesh jacket, gloves were all destroyed and the bike took a beating.

Jacket slid up and I rashed my back, gloves and jacket on the left arm burned through and rashed up my left arm and hand. Right elbow and wrist tweaked and swollen. Various bruising and generally beat up. Walked away though. GEAR ..... WEAR IT.

I have some further thoughts on this but will post them later.

Wow, that sucks! I've been seeing a LOT of buzzards around here lately, so I'm definitely going to start paying more attention to them!

Glad you came away relatively unscathed. Heal up quickly!

So that's the part of the story that is SOOOOO aggravating. I actually swapped my truck for my bike during lunch before this happened. On the way home I see buzzards on the side of the road and literally think to myself "remember those because hitting them on the bike would be BAD and animals are stupid".

So as I approached that location on the bike on the way back, I see them and slow down and make some noise. They fly off and I go on my way back to work. It was not but maybe 3 miles down the road after that, the unseen suckers that got me flew out of the tall grass/brush and WHAMMM.

Probably the fastest, fresh food he has had.

I've had my run-ins with the birds, mainly turkeys. I tend to just go by and not try to startle them.

I had a near miss with a large carrion bird yesterday (on an unfamiliar road far-ish from home). Sorry to hear yours wasn't a miss. Glad to hear the human damage was light.

an expensive and painful day. Heal up.

I've been a bit concerned about the bigger things (like badgers and deer) jumping out in front of me. There's plenty where I live. They're so damn unpredictable and if the hedges are close to the road you have pretty much no time to react.

Thank goodness I'm not the only one that lets loose the odd tasteless joke!

Neil; glad to read you aren't too badly for the worse! heal fast!

There's at least a couple of good lessons for others to learn from your misfortune.

- You can have a great jacket & pants combo but unless they're zipped together; the jacket will often slide right up & take your under shirt with it exposing your whole torso to the asphalt!

- critters don't have to be big to create total havoc and danger!

I had two separate incidences that could have been disastrous or fatal if fortunes had gone the other way:

The first was many years ago riding at a good clip on a sweeper which passed through an orchard. I had an open faced helmet back in the day with a cool pair of Ray-Ban Aviator sunglasses. Suddenly; I'm blinded! I was stung by a bee right between my eyes! I doubt it was the stinger but the impact instantly shut my eyes tight and turned on the waterworks! I have no idea how I managed to slow & stop the bike without falling down or rocketing off the edge of the road. Luckily; there was no other traffic to run into!

The second was way out in the backcountry; in the right time & place so to speak. Again; a long, long sweeper that I was taking full advantage of on my VFR800 at full song. The only exposed skin on my body was just below my Adams apple. I hit a large grasshopper. I may as well have been hit by a sledgehammer! I was very close to succumbing to total, uncontrolled shock and I could not draw a breath. I believe the only thing that saved me was my ABS system. I knew I had to stop NOW and before I lost consciousness but no way I would have had the finesse to pull off an emergency stop with my rapidly diminishing vision & awareness. The ABS permitted me to stomp, squeeze and hold until I came to a full stop and in a steady line without locking the rear or tucking the front. It saved my ass.

My point is; it doesn't have to be a large animal that gets you. Gear up & gear up properly. And even if you are the master of the universe on the brakes; ABS on the street can still save your butt in some unexpected situations!

Wow crazy act of nature.

Sounds like you got a few battle scars but considering you were going 70mph it couldn't been WAY worse.

Go gear.

The corpse. Somebody has to die first or there won't be any vultures flying around.. lol

Then it depends on the gender of the vultures.

All male or some female?

They are having an *rgy?

It is funny how you are more aware of the danger after it kicks you in the chin lol. I drive this same road nearly every day and have been noticing quite a few dead buzzards on the size of the road. Cars are apparently more effective buzzard slayers than ninjettes lol.

Granted buzzards are a bit different than seagulls, but you should've Iannone'd him anyway (youtube for those unfamiliar).

It only popped up on my screen for a second, but I think it said:
They're out to get me! I swear!

It had this icon:

Could you re-make it?
