Ego Got Me!

Ego got the better of me on one of my favorite turns. And yeah, that was a scooter I passed... had been filming him for about an hour, came up on my favorite turn and wanted to have some fun with it. I usually come in pretty hot drop two gears and just lean hard... this time for what ever reason I only dropped one gear and got confuncted in my head. you can see I straightened and tried to scrub some MPH about halfway through. FYI, your spark plug wrench works great for bending the shift lever out. Body not injured, bike is fine, ego's bruised. Went back the next day and railed the corner for resolution.

Went in a bit hot did we? Glad this was an easy crash and your already back at it. I have found the smallest of crashes are some of the worst.

I think that you have confused skills with ego.

I have counted six steering inputs between the entry and skidding points.

You did not need the outside hand on the handlebar, much less pushing it forward several times: all you needed was your left hand (that would have been a good resolution).

Good thing that you and the scooterer are OK.

You might be confusing steering input with a very bumpy road..., but please elaborate... if you have something to teach us.

Let it be a lesson, that's what you get when you are trying to look bad *** to someone else (the scooter)

Just needed to lean it over harder and get that knee down and you would have been fine. You could have used the rear brake a bit without standing the bike up but it would have to be near perfect input or else it would lockup and you'd stand the bike strait up and have yourself a whole new set of problems.

Lesson learned here is always maintain focus when riding "always"

I think that's camera tricks. It's a wide-angle camera and it's shaky. Watch those 'steering inputs', the whole picture moves/warps, not just his hands.

I almost bailed today, after 2 and a half months I was getting really comfortable on my bike and I was taking a corner and then I realized I was taking it too fast and there was a car in the opposite lane that I was gonna hit if I overshot it. So I rear braked while in the turn and managed to make the corner while fish-tailing it.

It was embarrassing, but at least I got out of it and with a new perspective.

Woah! Lucky spot to crash.

You seemed chilled after you hit the ground! Do you do some other sport that makes you so comfortable after something so intense?

Interesting that rojo and motofool think that you could've made the turn.

^^ It was hot entry (for the comfort level) and target fixation from my POV.

It's a safe bet that the turn could have been made. Trim some speed with rear brake, get off further, lean it more, twist the throttle like always, and get ready to pull over to change your undergarments.

You'd have to watch some of my Hamilton videos and see the speed is similar to this for most of the turns and for the most part I don't post my fastest videos to avoid people bitching at me for going to fast. But I will say the entry speed in the video was rather fast and would be hard for most riders to maintain their composure and make the corner. Simply put this is why you don't ride fast in the street, it removes your margin of error and causes you to pay dearly for simple mistakes.

I guess what I should have said it "I could have made that corner" but then I'd sound like a conceded prick and we wouldn't what that to happen

I think that if you come to the objective conclusion that you're very skilled at something, then there is no point in being modest about it.

It's pretty obvious to me that you're one of the better track riders on this forum, if not, the best.

Say it as you see it and leave us nooblets to decide what to take from what you say!

Glad you're OK.

I thought the scooter guy was pretty cool about it! Now you see why I shoot at least the "bro wave" at scooters, too. You never know, the guy on the scoot may have a 'Busa in the garage at home.

Of course, now that you've High-Fived a guy on a scooter ... I mean, I never went THAT far.

I rode skateboards mid 70s-80s, raced MTBs mid 80s-90s, then rock climbing for a decade or so, throw in some surfing and snowboarding and... well, needless to say I've crashed going a lot faster wearing a lot less. Back in the day I believed that if you weren't crashing you weren't pushing your limits. I'm in my 50s now and am considering I may need to rethink that model... but, damn I'm having fun

Regarding making the turn... hmmmm, really its all speculation at this point, I do know that I made a split second decision to take the softer crash by braking and steering straight into the wide part of the shoulder. If I had decided to try for the turn and not had the room... I would have gone down a lot harder, faster and with way less shoulder/ run out. Of course if I had made it...

Target fixation... yes, but not the kind I've experienced, not the oh **** oh ****, oh **** kind, this was like I came in a gear higher than usual, I didn't have that comforting compression braking, the oak leaves were a foot or more into the road than usual and my fixation was that I knew I was going to crash and I opted for the softer of the two scenarios I was presented with. Everything happened in about 1/2 to 3/4 of a second.

The lesson I'm walking away from this with is that... yeah you know that road or turn, but that doesn't mean its condition will be the same the next time you're on it.

Yeah.... the scooter guy is one of my bro's, he's got a $30k Road Glide sitting the garage, which I'm proud to say I'm the only person he's let ride it and back in his sport bike days he could ride a wheelie for like a mile... (there's video). I also own a Harley and we ride often. He bought the scoot for his commute and I talked him into taking it on some back road goat trail twisties so I could make a video of some rad scooter shenanigans. BTW, I also give the wave to scooters... and bicycles even got a wave back from a moto cop yesterday.

Ok, that explains it! Glad you're still having fun! I have a nice longboard, but I never raced it. I've used it tons though. Such a nice feeling gliding along on one of those things!

I hope I'm still having fun at 50 and beyond.
