learn by other peoples mistakes, it's cheaper and doesn't hurt as bad

Here is a pic I came across on FB bike group I am a member of.

Guy must have been practicing his turns and getting low and getting some glamor shots. He mentions that he high sided 30 or so minutes after this picture was taken and its not terribly hard to see why but I'm sure he thought he was doing great just before it happened.

I'm also curious. I've not gained enough skill to be able to look at a picture and determine what a rider is doing wrong or how a bike reacts given certain inputs.

If someone could break it down, point out the part of the picture that is the clue and then elaborate on how or why the high side occurred, that would be most helpful.

hmm.. I sees bad foot positioning, bad posture, stiff arms.

Unless he unintentionally "drifted" the rear. Can't see how else he would have high-sided.

pretty much nailed it.

All these things help contribute.

His bad body position means he has to lean the bike over further than if he was leaning with the bike more. This makes his poor foot positioning a problem as from the picture you can clearly see he is running of the foot and peg clearance and it was only a matter of time before he dragged foot, peg and or both which is what he did.
So after he drags his foot and peg one of two things happened he either chopped the throttle or grabbed throttle. I imagine he dragged foot and peg which took weight off rear, he chopped throttle only making things worse and since he is so high and tense on the bike once the rear grabbed again it was all over but the crying.

So, he had too much weight contributed o the outside, he should've commited more by putting his head lower and into the turn, possibly hunched over on one buttcheek? and his foot should have been pointed forward ?

Yup. He's pushing the bike down beneath him. Most of the body position tips are to help the bike need less lean angle for a given speed; he's instead forcing the bike to lean much more than necessary. Something is going to scrape, and if reacted too poorly, it's easy to see why the crash happened.

It's also too small a picture to say definitively, but it looks to me that the bike might be lowered some from stock, which would provide even less cornering clearance.

I bought soup yesterday and put it in my backpack to carry home. I was super concerned the lids would pop off and the soup would spill so I did all I could to keep myself vertical.

Lesson learned is the only time it's a good idea to ride crossed up is when you are carrying soup in your backpack.

First thing that crossed my mind, as I was (and occasionally still is) guilty of it myself. Speaking of foot positioning, my understanding is the foot should be parallel to the bike but off the levers, so you slide it forward when you need to shift/brake, right? My concern is that if I do that I have my right heel resting on exhaust.

A wiser man would have bought canned soup.

What I saw in pic is he is a bit "crossed up" sort of what wou would do in an emercency swerve situatio.

This happened to me three weeks ago. I was in the race clinic at gateway. The pictures from my first session looked like mark Marquez. As the day went on, I got tired and stopped getting so far off the bike. I was used to the speeds I was going when I was leaning properly so I eventually leaned over and stuck a peg in the track. Two weeks later I finally got back to work.
