**** I took what felt like a small beetle directly to the eye ball yesterday when riding my dirt bike. I maybe was going 30mph? not fast at all. It hurt like a hell!

I had to stop for a bit and wait till i could see well enough out of it before i could ride. Can't imagine that happening at highway speeds and surrounded by cars.

On my dirt bike i have never been a big fan of goggles, i have an adventure style helmet with flip down shads and visor but when i am by myself and it is nice out i don't generally have it down. I paid for it

I need to find a way to reduce the fogging from my breath. Unless I'm moving at a decent speed my visor fogs up as soon as I breathe on it.

They make products you can apply to the inside to help. Or a anti-fog visor may help, thats what i have.

i used to ride slower speeds (25 mph) with the visor up, until a fly or something hit me in the eye. Hurt like a bee. Luckily I was able to force my other eye to stay open to pull over.

Now I only sit at lights with the visor up. Down the rest of the time.

I've been riding visor-down or just slightly cracked at slow speeds since starting this thread.

The nose-diverter thing helps a lot, I've been out for an hour commute on pretty hot days with no fogging.

PSA: Keep Those Visors Down

So yesterday I rode with a friend to Shiloh National Military Park and on the way out of the park I took a large bug to the eye. Now I pretty much always have my visor closed at any speed over 20 ish (out of first gear) but it was warm and I wanted a bit of fresh air as I left the park yesterday. And a rather large bug, (I think it was a bumblebee) took advantage of this situation as it tried to destroy my left eye.

Luckily I saw it coming at the very last second and closed my eye but the impact was still very painful. I don't know how the bug didn't stay in my helmet but it didn't. After it hit my left eye vision my went all white in that eye for a brief second which was scary. And then my eye was watering for about 5 minutes. I flushed it out with water and waited to keep riding until I could see clearly again. The eye is still sore today and a little sensitive to light. If it still feels this way tomorrow I may get it checked out. Luckily my vision is just fine. I will NEVER ride that fast again with my visor completely open.

Are there any benefits to one or the other?
Every went 150+mph with the visor up?

Seriously though, the added wind drag on the helmet can "weight" the helmet enough that your neck my feel it after a long ride. I am fully buttoned up almost 100% of the time, even at slow speeds. After my encounter with wasps at a stop sign, I rarely open the visor accep to clear a foggy view of the world. I even wear the chin skirt in the summer.

Full disclosure: I love the heat and my favorite weather is 98 degrees with 98% humidity. What little bit of ventilation I get from opening the vents in my lid are enough for me. So ymmv...

I'm still visor up below 30, stop and go traffic around here means I dig up pretty quickly when it's hot at all.

The same. I've caught too much debris in the face, and had a burn or two under my eye from flicked cigarette butts. Kinda over that, not to mention the noise.

Right?! I've also had people dump big gulps from 7-Eleven on me while riding the freeway. That stuff is evil, because it's sticky, so then you have to ride with the visor up. Idiotic, ignorant, or homicidal jerks.

After taking a massive bug to the visor (yeah I was lucky and had it closed) I learned to keep it down while going through country roads. I had to pull over and clean it off, couldn't see a thing

I, too, have had that experience on several occasions. I also had the misfortune of some bugs making it through the chin vent of my helmet. Now that stays closed most of the time, too.

I once rode through a massive moth thing swarm. Visor down, everything button up tight... Except the gap around my neck.

One bug landed on my neck and crawled straight up into my helmet and proceeded to squeeze into the little liner pocket around my ear. Having no place to stop safely, I rode for about two miles fearing it'd crawl into my brain and lay eggs.

Taking my helmet off was terrifying too as I was worried about squishing the bug.

Holy crap, you're a better person than I am. I would have gone down for sure, then proceeded to do the "icky" dance while removing my helmet, screaming bloody murder, and running away like a banshee. Other than that, I'd remain quite calm

Keep your hands off it as the oil and dirt and grime is what leads it to start fogging. Another thing a lot of ppl are posting that the shield will save your face in a crash but I have seen a few crashes that face shield will fly off and the persons face is just fine.

Today a bug decided that it would be a good idea to wrestle with my left eyebrow as I split lanes on the 91 freeway. It was a little distracting, but not a big deal, or a big bug. So I guess it's VDATT now...

Ride on,

J~

P.S. - The eyebrow won.

Some helmets have a setting that leaves a very small gap between the visor and the helmet. Great for airflow and the opening is small enough to prevent things from going in. My Shoei RF1100 does it and i'm sure there are a few other brands/models that have it too.

You'd be surprised. I've had bugs shoot the gap in the past on my RF1100; they are sneaky at speed.

I open the visor when stopped for more than a second (at lights or waiting in line at a stop sign or something).

I also leave it open on warm days until i hit 30-35mph, but ONLY if I'm wearing my glasses or sunglasses.

My helmet doesn't have a setting that will give me a tiny gap, but I can keep it from locking closed, and I leave that crack available until I hit 60+, then I close the visor all the way.

On cold days, I keep the visor closed except when stopped due to both fogging and not enjoying freezing gusts against my face. I've tried anti-fog products, and the bar soap coating method, but nothing seems to help my visor when stopped on cold days
