Hit a deer

I have been lurking here for awhile because this place is full of info and its great so I figured I should make an account and try to get some help from anyone who is willing.

I had just come around a turn at about 30 mph on a small two lane road in my town and a deer ran right in front of me. I barely had time to start braking and ended up hitting the back of the deer which of course sent me and my bike in different directions.

My bike is pretty scratched up and it broke off my clutch lever and broke a good bit of my left side mid fairing but I had a friend use some vice grips and he rode it back home for me cause I sprained my wrist pretty good.

After inspecting it today the left side front and back blinkers do not light up at all and the blinker display also does not light up. The right side still works fine though. I was hoping someone could give me a few ideas of what could be the problem before I pop off the fairing. The two front blinkers are flush mounts.

It is a 2010 ninja 250

Any help is appreciated.

I think you will need to remove the fairing. It could be as simple as a wire broke or the plug came loose. I hope it is that easy, good luck. Welcome to ninjette.

Welcome Cole!

Sorry about your down and I hope your ok and all. Your issue is most likely bulb related. Replace the bulbs and see where your at.

Best wishes man...

Thanks for the info. I have it bookmarked now.

The deer was gone by the time I got up so who knows. A couple minutes before this all happened I stopped at a stop sign extra long because there were about 15 of them crossing the road.

I should have figured there would be more a little further down and been more cautious.

Live and learn I guess.

Love is in the air....:
http://www.soundrider.com/archive/sa...eerohdeer.aspx

"Wild grazers such as deer tend to migrate in herds, moving towards higher elevations in the Spring, and returning to lower elevations in the Fall. They follow age-old migration routes that predate the highway by thousands of years. The importance of that to the touring rider is that risks are greatest where the highway crosses the migration areas. DEER MIGRATION signs should set off alarm bells in your head-bone in the Spring, and again in the Fall."

That's not a bad list for crash damage. Make sure nothing else is messed up. Glad you seem okay and are ready to fix your bike & keep riding.

You never mentioned what time of day this happened. When riding at night in deer country, I slow waaaaaaayyyyyy down, or follow not too far behind a cage and let them "sweep" the road in front of me. Deer can pretty much come out of nowhere, at any time of day, and their actions are totally unpredictable.

As far as preventing a repeat encounter, I would say that unless you were able to see the deer sooner, there isn't a whole lot you can do. Vehicle lights tend to blind them. One night, a deer ran into the front of my stopped vehicle which still had its lights on.

This happened around 4 in the afternoon. It was a fairly wooded area so seeing them was difficult.
I will just have to be more cautious around those areas from now on.

So I took the lens off the back left blinker and the bulb is no good but I cannot seem to find a replacement for it. Anyone know where to buy one of these little guys?

Sorry to hear about your crash but I'm glad you weren't hurt.
I'm not famililar with newgen bulbs but I would assume that its a fairly common bulb available at any auto parts store. Just take the bulb with you to make sure you get the correct one.

You would think it would be easy to find. Turns out it isn't :|
I had to goto the closest dealer and they only had one that they pulled out of another bike. Kind of a pain.

Those stupid little marker bulbs are a PITA because most bulbs with that base have too large of a globe. I had to resort to online ordering.

You need single filament bulbs, right? Amazon or Parts Unlimited

Use the links below to help too, but these are the wrong bulbs.

Dual filament bulbs.
Dennis Kirk, Amazon, or Chaparral Racing

I know everyone likes pictures so I finally got around to taking some.

Sorry to hear about the incident. I'm glad you're OK. Like someone else posted, I ride much slower as the sun begins to set. They like to come out to play around sunset.

It also looks like your bike slid for quite some time after impact! =(

Also, is it just the angle the pics were taken, or does your rear tire seem squared off a bit?

Good luck with everything. Make sure you go over the bike with a fine tooth comb before riding it again.

When I purchased the bike it had already been put down on that same side so I just added to what was already there.

The front didn't really get to much damage. The fairing covering the tire has a crack in it but nothing major.

I hit more of the back end of the deer so I guess it kept going. I have seen one limping around in that area since it happened.
