So my old engine went bad due to oil starvation so I went ahead and bought a new engine ended up doing the engine swap and I went to turn it over and it seems like it was going to but it kind of sounded like the battery was dying and turned into a click click clickI'm at a loss of what to do nowI change the oil oil filters new spark plugsso I don't know what could be left if it was electricity then the bike wouldn't have tried to turn over in the first placeI am really at a losscan anyone help me figure out what I did wrongor what I can do to remedy the problem?

Can you turn the engine freely by hand or is it seized?

So I dont know how to turn it by hand but I did add power to the motor to see if it would turn and it did, as for the battery its been on the charger for an hour or so with the same results, possibly the new starter is bad? Btw the "new engine" is off a slightly older bike but was running fine about 4 years ago

Use some huge washers and unscrew the plug in the left engine cover. Insert a wrench as the picture shows and rotates the engine by hand to loosen it up.

Pull the plugs and then try spinning it. Could be gas or oil hydrolocking da bish.

This + Motofool's tip, also, if the front sprocket cover is off, you can use that to turn the engine as well. Just make sure it's in gear. Honestly, the first thing I do before turning an engine over that "belongs to me" is drain the oil and fill adequately.

So I tried turning the engine and it turns by hand but not quite as freely as I would imagine it should tried to turn it over and slightly different but with the same results. And I just did an oil change so its got 2 quarts of fresh oil in it but some how possibly not lubing up the engine well enough? And possibly the starter was my only other guess of what could be wrong.

Can't you just put it in gear and try to give it a good push to see if you hear the engine turn? My dad and I did that to an old Honda 360.

2 quarts of oil is overfilling. Holds roughly 1.7 quarts.
Dd you check to see if your coils are hooked up? If not have you had the battery tested?

The battery is fairly new only about 4 months old, the coil is plugged in im fairly sure they are plugged in right, but I had forgotten to lable them taken them off but the longer cable I hooked to the bottom and shorter on top. I figured if they were wrong it wouldn't have tried to start up right after the engine swap and oil change.l

If you have a volt meter load test the battery if it drops below 9 volts you need a new one. doesn't really matter how old it is could be bad

turn over
Have you tried turning by wrench w plugs out and pushing? If it has been sitting for a long time the cylinders could be rusty-a shot of oil down the plug holes would help. Stay calm-science it out. Although you possibly got a junk motor it is more likely just stuck/stiff from sitting. You should've checked rotation ability and valve clearances b4 installing it. This is a learning experience-you may not like school but education is needed in all of life including bikes!

One reason it's nice to update threads when the problem is solved (or not), rather than leaving them hanging.

Also you can turn it over by hand by removing the engine plugs on the left side and using a socket. If it turns freely and you hear it compressing it's more than likely fine, but you can do a compression test to make sure. As for the battery when was the last time you replaced it? The electrolyte may be bad if it's old and recharging won't be as good as just replacing it. If you haven't tried replacing it with a new battery yet I'd start there. Easiest way to test if the starter is bad for sure (other than having a general idea via multimeter testing) is to take it off, and attach it directly to the battery. Your positive lead will go to the screw down connection and then just touch the metal side of the starter to ground it and complete the circuit. If it immediately spins without any hesitation, and it does it every time you test it this way, it's not your starter. If there is hesitation or it stops and starts or buzzes or grinds, your starter needs either replaced or rebuilt. |
