would be interesting to see pics of your improvised garage.

any tips how to avoid landlords from freaking out or how you hide stuf or do you have to. im bouts to rent a place with walk in basement and no garage. i would pull the bike out to weld if i had to but to store it il have it inside.

I put my 250 in the basement even though I have a garage (out of space!!!). My tip, don't hide it. As long as your not damaging anything it shouldn't matter how your use the space. If you can weld in the space, surely you can park a bike in the same space without issue??!?!?!?!?!

My basement was home for the 250 and 650 for the past three years, only came out to ride. But started to wonder how it would affect my house insurance if the place burned down with two bikes in it??? So we built a shed this summer for them, would really suck if the house burned down and the insurance company said "sorry but you had two bikes full of gas in the house so we're not going to cover it"

I'm agree with Chris. Don't hide it. Do make sure you have taken precautions for safety; don't park it next to a space heater, Class B/C fire extinguisher at hand, etc.

I would even say talk to the Land Lord, except, sometimes it is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

don't hide it. if they say something about it ask them if they would prefer that you didn't pay them money every month. don't say anything else. if they tell you you need to move it tell them 'oh really?' and say nothing more. tell them have a nice day when they leave.

the key is fully understanding and accepting what they are trying to tell you in a friendly way. don't lie and say you will do something you wont. just accept that they have told you to do something, and move on with your life. if you want to do what they told you to do, do it. if you don't, don't. don't argue. if they ask for specifics like when you will move something, tell them you aren't sure. start talking about how busy you are and then launch into a very detailed story about something completely unrelated. make sure you tell the story passionately and be involved in the story telling. try to embellish your own interest in the story

eventually people just stop asking you to do things.

Many lease agreements prohibit storing gasoline and other similar flammable substances inside, and in many locals it's a fire code issue as well. The gasoline in the tank qualifies as flammable. Also, if you're a home owner or you have renter's insurance, read your policy carefully to see if there are exclusion clauses related to indoor gasoline and/or vehicle storage, often times there are.

A bit of trivia: At indoor car shows (and motorcycle shows) all gasoline has to be drained from all tanks before the vehicles are brought inside, and you'll see stickers or other tags indicating that a fire marshal signed off on the completion of that task. If you think about it, say there's 500 cars in a show, and each one has ten gallons of gas in the tank. That's five thousand gallons of a very flammable substance to fuel any fire that may break out. Toasty...

Yes - but why go through the trouble of actually draining the gas, when it's just as easy to hold the engine at 8000 rpm in neutral to burn off the excess gas. Oh wait, that's why:

So many rules that tell you want you can and can't do in the privacy of your home... uggg. I just don't understand why this is acceptable to people. At any given time, there are 10+ flammable liquids in a home and none of them are gas. Chances are, there is at least one within 10 feet of you right now. Do we really need rules that say "don't burn it down"?

When i told my home inspector i planned on parking a car or possibly my motorcycles in my garage (its a wierd angle for a car to pull in, and the door is small) he told me "if anyone asks you if you park a car inside, look at them like your crazy and say how do you expect me to fit a car in there"

I also realize inspectors arent held accountable for anything under the law, and that the insurance would be the one to deny any claim if something were to happen, i still found it funny though.

nobody cares if you wont effect others. will an inspector give a rats ass about your garage full of gas tanks when you are 3 hours from your closest neighbor? in the city, if your house burns down 10 feet from mine, chances are pretty high my house will suffer damage. or at least the worth will go down since theres a big smouldering ash pit next to it.

i agree with you, but when you live in densely populated areas you have to follow the rules

Whaat? No video of the lambo screaming to its death ? Bummer

I considered moving them into my house but my bikes seem to always seem to have a slight gas smell. Maybe it's venting , maybe it's something else.

Your homeowner's insurance is probably not affected by what you keep in the house. Read your policy. It should have an "exclusions" section that will list every kind of damage that is not covered.

Technically it's not your house if you have a landlord.

I'm not single but I kept my Ninja in the living room of my apartment last winter. Now that I have my own house, I am able to get my 250R in my house by putting boards on the front stairs but I'll have to buy ramps to get the 9R in as it is just too heavy for the boards. I still have a week or two, though, before I have to worry about that.

This is my bike tucked in for the hurricane a few weeks back. Planning to winterize tomorrow, so she'll likely go back into that room. Might need to figure out something else for the other bikes so I have room to do a little work on her...

I dont have any pics on hand but I keep both mine in the kitchen thru the winter. They are there now actually. I must admit I sometimes keep my 250 in the living room by the staircase in case there is a nice day, I can just scoot it out the front door. I drop my insurance to the bare spankin minimum so I dont ride the big un.

Edited to add: I do keep them plugged into a tender and covered. Also, my kitchen is HUGE.

The issue is having them in air conditioned spaces. The concern is combustible vapors making their way in to the furnace via the return air duct. The secondary concern is carbon monoxide. Having said that, my bike would be in the dining room if I lived in an apartment too.

So uh I don't really see what the problem would be keeping it inside. I mean I have mine in my attached garage. If it were to catch fire, I'm 100% certain my house would catch fire.

What about if you don't have central cooling and heating?

That's the purpose of a garage. they typically aren't heated and cooled space, unless it's by a portable heater or window unit.

He's going to foul the plugs eventually unless he actually puts it under load. He's better off winterizing and not doing that. Lol

Judging by the guy's expression, his pasty white skin and the size and decor of his lounge, I'd say that guy is English in England. Earthquakes are very, very rare here. In fact: any kind of extreme weather or geographic events are rare.

Judging by the guy's expression, his pasty white skin and the size and decor of his lounge, I'd say that guy is English in England. Earthquakes are very, very rare here. In fact: any kind of extreme weather or geographic events are rare.
It was the english reg plate on the back of bike that gave it away for me

It kinda annoys me that he has a nice bike like that and it probably spends more time on the wall then on the road, besides, however gorgeous that bike may be, it's not exactly art. - I remember Kevin McCloud saying pretty much the same thing on an episode of grand designs, it's very vulgar and a waste.

The Ducati on the wall theme seems quite popular though in England.

Oh my, Akima. You must not hide behind your denial, my little friend.

According to the Source That Knows No Falsehood:

In the British Isles, "Nonetheless, earthquakes have on occasion resulted in considerable damage, most notably in 1580 and 1884; Musson (2003) reports that there have been ten documented fatalities – six caused by falling masonry and four by building collapse."

Falling masonry. Falling Ducatii, it's all stuff on the wall. Of course, your next earthquake isn't due for 985 $1000 valve adjustments, so you're probably good.
