Do You Lock Your Helmet on Your Bike?

I carry mine 90% of the time. Sometimes if i'm just running in somewhere i'll latch the chin strap around the handle at the back of the seat. I don't like how it rests on the exhaust in the helmet lock. I only use that sometimes if i've been sitting for a minute on the phone or something before i'm ready to get off and the pipe cools down a bit. Sometimes I even leave it hanging on the handle bar if i'm just running in somewhere for 2 seconds and i can mostly see the bike.

I just realized my cheap helmet is around 4-5 years old, and that it's apparently bad to keep one that old. Do I have to buy a new one?
I was going to wait and save up money for a helmet I liked [w/ style + protection], but should I just get one right now, even if it's only going to be from the cheaper kind from cyclegear sale?

My biggest concern with leaving my helmet out in public is how would I get home if something happens? I'd rather not risk being stranded just because I was too lazy to carry a helmet. Helmet cost is also a huge factor in not leaving my helmet where it could be stolen/vandalized.

I have this problem sometimes. In school it's no big deal I just walk around with it. Last night though I went on a date with a girl and I would feel like a tool walking in to a nice restaurant with my helmet on my hands and not her... But when I'm sitting in the restaurant i'm kinda paranoid about someone stealing my helmet. =\

I run a cable lock through my visor. (I hook it to the "handle" on the back of my seat, since I have the older model 250) It works really well. Easy to set up and if somebody wants to come with high pressure chain cutters then fine, they can have the $90 helmet. But I think that 9999 times out of 10,000 a thief would see it and just say forget it. lol

Thanks to @Kevin1956 I picked up one of these:



Unfortunately, my local police station was out of them (having given most away to gun owners) so had to pay for mine at a nearby gun store. Its a stiff enough cable that I just leave it on my rear peg stay when not in use. Very handy to lock the helmet to the bike without fussing with the rear seat.

I experience the same paranoia!!!!
I usually park my bike where I can see it
Then I leave my helmet on the left side seat hanger and the jacket hooked to the exhaust side hook and then I flop it across the seat.

But when I cannot watch my bike, or be within reasonable distance to check on it and I am wearing my nice gear- I put aircraft grade cable through the sleeves of my jacket after I hang it on the hook and possibly loop it through the helmet also!

My GF uses a gun lock like above- but her helmets are so dirty and scratched by now that I don't think she could give them away lol.

I have some plain, scratched bug splattered helmets that no one would reasonably steal. But when I wear my favorite gear - I take it with me unless I am in a good area - and I lock Lock LOCK its and leave it parked as visibly as I can.

I have never had a problem - knock on wood and all that.

My gloves always stash under the rear cowl tail seat cover thing - that space is allocated for them and the bracket holds them nicely.

Another rider once told me that he used to lock his helmet to his bike. One night he walks out to his bike, and finds that some b@st@rd has pissed in his helmet!

He didn't want to take a chance on riding home without a helmet, but he sure as heck didn't want to put his helmet on, so he had to call a buddy to bring him a spare helmet.

He stopped locking his helmet to his motorcycle after that.

I use the cable gun lock for my helmet mostly, but sometimes I use it to lock my tank bag to the handlebars when I have it on the bike. (I replaced the plastic D ring on the bag with a steel one). If using the cable lock for the bag, I use one of these for the helmet. I picked up at a local shop. Around $20 I think. I run it through the helmet D rings and lock it either to the left rear peg backet, or to my Alu-Rack.

could you just use a plain carabiner run it through the d rings on helmet and pinch the chin strap under the seat ? the carabiner would prevent the chin strap from sliding out.

@crazymadbastard , I could just use the helmet lock provided under the seat (2nd gen 250R), but removing and replacing the seat's a pain. I can lock/unlock the helmet in a matter of seconds with this.

"A pain?" Seriously?!
People always say this and I can only imagine that they are either doing it wrong or their equipment is defective somehow. Popping the seat on and off on the J-bike couldn't be easier.

To secure, the tab easily slots in the back blindly and all you do is press the seat down to latch (does not need your key). To open, simply lift the front while turning the key then release or remove the key and slide the seat forward. You can do it all with one hand in a fraction of a second. You don't even need to keep holding the seat up because its weight will not cause it to accidentally latch when you let go.

I did it several times a day when I was still commuting daily and I never once had trouble with it. The only thing I can imagine is that people are doing silly things like turning their key when reattaching it or keeping the key inserted and needlessly turned while sliding it off.

To open, just twist, lift, release, and slide. I used my thumb and pointer finger to twist the key while my middle finger lifted the seat, then I'd release the key, grab the seat and slide it forward. You can take your key out at any time because it is no longer needed after you released it. You can leave it in to keep your hands free as long as you realize that you don't need to touch the key to secure the seat back down (works fine regardless of its presence).

that is a grand Idea, i will have to find mine, i have a couple, but having no kids, they are pretty useless.

I have a 1/8" braided steel cable wrapped around my frame inside the bike. I then have a loop come out under the seat where I have a padlock to the d-ring.

Here's something to consider, take a cable lock and open the visor, run the cable through the visor and attach it to the wheel.

Make sure it is a quality cable that won't break easy.

It's a win, win, it's much easier to put on then the regular helmet lock, you don't have to worry about the helmet scratching the paint, and it is another thing that may stop someone from stealing your bike all together.
