Mesh Jacket suggestions

Its that time of the year...

temps are up in central texas and i'm starting to feel the desire to leave the jacket at home. Last summer was my first summer down here and I mostly wore a T-shirt, my commute wasn't on the superhighway either. Now that i'm going 70+ I'm looking for a mesh jacket.

Not something i want to spend a ton of cash on, I don't expect it to protect me much, I guess at 70 a mesh jacket is just a psychological exercise anyhow...

any recommendations? My budget is >100 is that even practical?

This one fits the bill, looks pretty nice for the price...

I've had my Jordan Mesh jacket for over 8 years now. I replaced all the pads (back, elbows, & shoulders) for the 2nd time this past winter. I know a mesh jacket is generally a one and done jacket with lessened protection. I too live in TX and it gets beyond hot here. Without it, I'd ride in just a T-shirt. IMO minimal protection is better than NO protection. A leather jacket certainly offers the best protection and I ride in one for all temps below 85. Anything above, I need more airflow and wear my mesh. Just my 2 cents.

I have 3 Fieldsheer textile mesh (2 men's/1 women's) and love them all, also I have textile mesh overpants, and between those and some under armour t-shirts and briefs, it feels like I'm riding naked.

Check out the shift mesh jacket w/ some under armor for added protection. You're spot on to think that it will not offer you optimum protection, you can mitigate that "somewhat" with armor without the expense of heat.

Having been there and done that.... your sweat from greater perforated gear/armor will cool you more than mesh. You just have to build your tolerance to being hot.

Either way, I hope you get something that serves you well.

Ps.. It's hard to use the words "practical", "budget", and "motorcycle" in the same sentence.

One must remember that if a $200 jacket is "too expensive", than so is the hospital stay and off work time due to the cheaply built/totally lacking jacket from conforming to a "budget".

..and cue the wolves

A very good point, and I agree, never skimp on gear.

Mesh will protect your skin at 70 and at 85 as well, as long as the seams don't fail.

Your choice seems to be good.

This site offers good reviews, size charts, pictures of features and good deals:

This one is under $100 in closeout:

Do not get a black or dark colored mesh jacket. I learned this the hard way and now have a white mesh jacket (Joe Rocket) and pants (Icon Timax and Icon Hooligan overpants). I often wear shorts under the overpants when it's very hot. White shows dirt quicker, but is much cooler than black.

The Joe Rocket jacket was bought used on ebay and the Timax pants were also used and from the For Sale section of a bike forum.

Here are some sites that may have what you want.

It is very possible to get a mesh summer jacket without sacrificing protection. Unfortunately it'd be hard to do so under $100 but here are some options:

Dainese makes a textile jacket called Super Speed that offers great protection and ventilation: http://www.mototude.com/DAINESE-Supe...-p/1735143.htm

Another popular choice for riders in hot environments is a half & half jacket like Rev'it's Galactic. It offers large mesh panels on the chest and back and gets really good airflow but still has leather at the high-impact points to offer the best abrasion protection - http://www.mototude.com/REV-IT-GALAC...t-p/fjl055.htm

One more vote for RevIt Airwave. They also made one that's similar in price that has a more sport fit but can't remember the name now.

I'd advise against the new icon overlord in textile. I havent crashed in it or anything so idk how well itll hold up, but it gets really hot and doesnt cool down much when moving past 90 degrees. I dont mind but at one point i got light headed and had to pull over and take a waterbreak.

The mesh jacket has since been collecting dust and I'm trying to sell it off.

Drink lots of water, stick with leather and learn to get used to taking a shower as soon as you get home. That's how I handle summer now. Triple digits? Bring it on.

I have this one, and wear it in temps up to 100F. It's definitely hotter than no jacket at the high end of the thermometer, but it's never been uncomfortable enough for me to not want to wear it.
http://www.cyclegear.com/BILT-Blaze-...orcycle-Jacket

I know that people love to talk sh$t about Bilt gear but I have been down twice in it at 35-40mph, one of them I slid on my side for about 50 feet. None of my upper body was injured at all and the jacket still looks 100% new. I have also been happy with my Bilt boots, which were in the same crashes and protected my feet and are still functional. Those have a few scratches on them but still work perfectly.

I should also mention that you should definitely replace the back protector in any mesh jacket if it just has the foam kind. I upgraded mine to the CE hard polymer one.
