this bike is so fast though like

Nice score!

I'm thinking about picking up a 650 v-strom in the future, it's a great motor.

I'm happy with what I paid for it. I've heard a lot of opinions on where in the 'good deal' spectrum it falls under, but I think $2200 for a 600cc sport bike with low mileage and in good condition (although it's been dropped on both sides and at one point had a salvage title but is now clean) is a good price. I know I shouldn't pay for other people's mods, but it's lowered a lot and that's worth something to me because I would definitely have to get that done anyway for about $250, and it also has frame sliders which is another thing I definitely wanted. All in all it's EXACTLY what I was looking for at EXACTLY the amount I received from my totaled bike, so I'm quite content. Unless it has any hidden problems. But the guy I bought it from also seemed pretty cool and legit, so I think it'll be okay. So excited to get my temp tags and start riding tomorrow! Mom's not so pleased.

I wanted the fully faired one, too. This one was actually the S model, half faired, but converted to naked with OEM parts. You can always convert them back and they can go between naked or full fairings, the fairings are just really expensive. You can get a whole set for like $500 on ebay but they're probably Chinese shite that doesn't fit right and takes a million years to ship from some back alley of Hong Kong...

I'm not understanding that part. Once a bike has a salvage title, how can it remove that status? It's effectively been totalled; I don't see how it gets "untotalled"?

(I realize that salvage title bikes can be completely fixed and may not have anything at all mechanically wrong with them; I'm just wondering about the paperwork, as it sounds funky)

I honestly have no idea. I know you can go through state trooper inspection and then get an 'R' title or rebuilt title. But it's not a clean title. It could be that once you transfer the R title to a different owner and it's inspected by the state inspection, it drops the R? I'm not sure. I have the title right here on my coffee table and it says Washington, D.C. Certificate of Title... there's nothing rebuilt or salvage on it. And insurance happily accepted it (cheap, too) so I don't think there will be any issue. The title as I saw it is clean and clear and legitimate without any lein or R or salvage or whatever.

You have the title in your name? Or you still need to turn in that existing title that you signed to get the official one in your name? Here's what this reference site says for the D.C. DMV:

http://www.dmv.org/washington-dc/salvaged-vehicles.php

Quote:
How to Salvage a Vehicle
If your vehicle has been badly damaged in a serious accident or by severe weather and you will be getting rid of it, then you will need to apply for a salvage certificate of title from the DMV. If this process is not handled by your auto insurance company, then you can call the Washington, D.C. DMV for more information about obtaining a salvage title. You must apply for a salvage certificate of title before the vehicle is repaired and within 30 days of the vehicle being damaged.

If you own a vehicle that simply can't be repaired to a road-safe condition, you need to instead apply for a nonrepairable vehicle certificate before selling or disposing of the vehicle and within 30 days of the damage.

Once a vehicle has a nonrepariable certificate issued, it may not be titled or registered in the District of Columbia. Not only that, but ownership of such a vehicle may only be transferred once. Essentially, this means that once it goes to the junk yard, it never leaves.

Resurrecting a Salvage Vehicle
Sometimes cars that have been seriously damaged can be rebuilt and legally redeemed from salvage status. In this case, you will get a rebuilt salvage title once the car has successfully passed inspection. The rebuilt salvage brand will remain on the title permanently, no matter how many times the vehicle changes ownership. However, you can register the car and drive it on public roads as if nothing ever happened to it.
If it's supposed to be a salvage/rebuilt title according to the seller, yet you're looking at a title that doesn't even say that, it could mean one of two things. One, it means that somehow the designation got dropped (unlikely, but possible), and it now is as good as a clean title. Or, it could mean that the seller is giving you the original title before the one that was sent after it was salvaged. Which could mean a number of bad things, in that perhaps the seller really didn't have ownership of the bike, or some other reason why they didn't want to share the current title. All of this will become clear one way or another when you take it to the DMV yourself to get it registered properly in your name.

Yeah, the title literally says CLEAR on it... It's in the name of the seller. He gave me a signed bill of sale with all the info needed (you need that in MD to get a title in your name). If this guy hadn't said anything about it, I would never have known that the bike had had any other kind of title, ever. It's free and clear and clean and I see no reason why it shouldn't be easily transferred, it's signed in all the right places by the right people. Unless it's fake. Which would suck. But still. The people at the DMV here don't give a ****, they don't even look twice, considering my last title fiasco this one looks relatively straightforward. We'll see tomorrow...

Apparently he had 4 people schedule apts and not show up, and 2 people showed up but his wife accidentally had taken the key on her keyring when she went out... I have no idea why it didn't sell sooner, I guess I might find out at inspection lol but yeah it seems really clean and from the way they acted, well taken care of.

Sounds to me like the bike was destined to be yours. That being said, the SV650 is virtually indestructible and if you do need to replace anything, parts are readily available everywhere online. Passing inspection shouldnt be a problem with a bike in that condition. It helps that the bike is really clean!

Soooooooo I just got back from the MVA. The bike has had 3 owners before me. The first owner crashed it at 3,700 miles and totaled it. It was branded salvage, but the next owner SOMEHOW ended up with a clear MD title. It was sold to the 3rd owner under a clear MD title and transferred to a clear DC title. I bought it with the clear DC title and they said, oh, it was once salvage, we have to brand your title as salvage. WTF? How in the **** did the 2nd owner clear that salvage brand on the title?

I'm not that upset, at least I have something to ride that's street legal right now, and I only have to take it to regular inspection instead of the salvage inspection done by the state trooper for a colossal $250. It's just that I won't be able to sell it for what I paid for it. Which is ironic and kind of karma because I got $2200 for my ninja when I only paid $1100 for it. Haaaa. Whatever. Sigh.

be careful, the DMV doesn't give a **** until they stumble upon the fact that you have been doing something wrong and can be fined.

After I moved, I did everything by the book and kept all documentation, 6 months later I get a fine in the mail from them for $2k stating I have had lapse in insurance coverage on my truck for the past 6 months and I owe fine and late fees I had a feeling it might happen and was glad I had all the right paper work to send them to prove they are a bunch of 's

Sell? What is this "sell" you speak of? I thought you were just supposed to buy motorcycles - not sell them.

The rule is you can't have too many...

I've had my SV for 8 years now, and haven't once considered selling it.

Have fun doing wheelies. You ride the bike, not the title My F4i had a salvage title. Didn't know when I bought it since I didn't do the paperwork on it, so I got burned big time on resale. Sold it for waaaaay less than I paid after putting hard work and dedication into it to get it running properly, kind of was a bad deal lol. Then used the $$$ to buy a mustang for dirt cheap off a guy I knew from college, so I broke even financially but I still miss that bike. NEVER LET HER GO. I never thought I would. But when you're in college and you constantly have to bum rides because your motorcycle is useless when it's way below freezing and may snow or ice without warning, you kind of lose a little perspective on how amazing the bike is and suddenly something with more wheels and doors and a roof sounds pretty good. And I still had my backup bike so... anyways, I'm just rambling at 2 am, enjoy your SV, and seriously enjoy the wheelies lol

ya, you have a point kawikid. I rode through last winter including through all the snowstorms and it was awful, I'm glad I have a truck now w/4x4 and working ac/heat to get me through the snow this winter. It's a pretty nice truck too, disregarding that it's as old as I am lol

the wheelies you haven't done yet duh
