Motorcycle(s): I don't even know anymore??

how many motorcycles is too many?

From a normalish person stand point, meaning not crazy loaded, I have a personal mechanic to handle all my maintenance.

I do think the mechanical state of the bikes does come into play somewhere in there as well but that makes it complicated.

Anyway,

I have always had a nice list of bikes I would like to own/collect and after recently picking up another bike (dirt bike) and being swamped with maintenance and other things for 4 of the bikes I own it has me like "no more bikes, I can't handle it"

I never thought I would say those words

I suppose if you had a nice collection then most of them would not see too many miles and upkeep for them would be minimal year to year

But my answer is 5 bikes, 4 bikes that you ride routinely is enough, sure you could have another 2 that don't get a lot of attention but if you are riding them 4 seems like a reasonable number IMO.

With 6 in my garage, once you get past 4 for a single rider... they start to sit more than being ridden.

I've always said here on Ninjette that there's no such thing as a silly question.
Well Joe; you've managed to ask one!

My personal plan is 6, and the fiancé knows this. 1 of them is for her though, so I guess 5.

2 dual sports (1 for her)
ninjette
super sport
track bike
naked bike

Once I have that, I will rotate the list. IE sell my ducati 848 track bike for another track bike.

Im still up in the air if I need a 7th for long trips. Or If my super sport will just end up being my track bike and have a long trip bike (my current ninja 1000, or a BMW like I rented)

Eh at least it keeps my brain active thinking about all the possibilities.

What about the 125 and the 50cc?

I thinks you are actually at 6 bikes!

^ I don't count those cause they don't get ridden much and upkeep is minimal. They are more like play bikes

Motorcycle(s): 2 many 2 list

Posts: A lot.
I never ask how many pairs of shoes my wife has, she never ask how many 2-wheel vehicles I have; that's just the way we work.

Nearly 9 years since we got married, I must have gone through at least a dozen motorcycles, still have 7 in garage at one resident, one at work and another at the second resident.

All of them get ridden at least once every other week, some are ridden more often.. bicycles are ridden daily, rain, snow or sleet.. 2-wheel is part of life for me.

My garage thread since 2011 Not so easy to spot all of them in garage.

Z1R rider's formula of N+1 is what I live by.

Just picked up number 12 (CRF150) last week if I include the 2 Ninjas that my son rides (my name is on the Title, so...).

Can't have too many.

Z50R
305 Dream
450 Scrabbler
400-4
XR100
CRF100
CRF150
SV650 (2)
Ninja 250 (2)
Derbi GPR
TBD (to be determined)

I def feel you on the maintenance part. Pretty much everything bike currently needs something, and its getting a bit overwhelming.

My list currently:
12 Ninja ZX6R Street
09 Ninja ZX6R Race Bike
14 Ninja 300 Race Bike
10 Ninja 250 - Commuter
06 Husqvarna SM610
04 Suzuki Intruder 1400
05 Yamaha YZ125
07 CRF100 (yes even the little bike needs work)

And.... I may be buying a Ducati Monster really cheap in the next week or two...

Well, I never thought we'd have more than one, for my hubby, but once we get his electric bike back, we'll have three. The Brammo, his Triumph, and my little Ninjette.

I figure the ideal number is a sliding goalpost- how many can we take care of? Do they serve different riding types (his bikes are one for canyons and daily use, the other is for longer trips and freeway)? Are they paid for? Three is probably our minimum at this point and we may add another one or two, depending.

Originally i was thinking 5 bikes would start to be a handful but i think i would like to change my answer to 6. A dedicated track bike is completely acceptable as other people have pointed out.

I am currently having two bikes, one a moped and another one ninjette. I struggle to keep em both running let alone to have more than two.... *sigh*

As long as they have varigated uses.

I'm at 4 currently, and all see equal use.

A logical individual would have atleast two. If one is down for repair, another must be available for riding.

KTM 125sx, Gasgas xc250, kawasaki kx500, Yamaha wr450 supermotard, Yamaha r3, Aprilia rs250, BMW s1000rr, Kawasaki zx14, some kind of touring bike... Lets add another for good measure and 10 bikes. Ten is the perfect amount of bikes.

Edit: I forgot a 65cc two stroke with some race mods and made to fit a full grown adult, because those are fun as hell, and I prefer 65 smokers to 110 thumpers.

Double Edit: I also forgot a ttr125 with dual sport tires and a wheelie bar. (great for practicing wheelies, and teaching your GF to ride.)

Triple Edit: You need a Yz85 supermoto.

I really could see having a dual sport or a dirt bike, a bike for long rides or touring, and a bike for fun and cruising around town.

You still need something stupid powerful that you can't legally get out of first gear on, like a zx14.

Although the KZ1000 was once a drag bike it now has a stock engine with the drag pipe and big carbs. I haven't had it out in years but it used to turn some heads with the open Kirker and wheelie bar on the street.
