Oldster newish to Riding

Hi All,

I picked up a Vulcan 900 a couple of years ago.

I've been interested in trying out a small street racer so, I picked up a non-running semi beat 2001 ex250 with 4k miles on it for a mere $350.

No Keys.
It has been dropped a few times.
Most all plastic is cracked.
Not started in the last 2 years (reportedly was running well at the time)
Most likely need a new front tire before any real riding.

The plastics are melding together quite well with ABS cement with extra ABS black pipe plastic added to the cement for binder.

I had to pick up a replacement rear brake pedal (ebay) as the old one was bent beyond straightening.

Front brake and clutch levers bent back nicely.

I don't have a torch so I ordered new handlebars

I'm starting to tackle the carburetors... Nothing appears too bad. A little green gunk in the #1 carb... I assume from water in the gas.

Question: do the float valves normally come out... These appear to be a bit different then the automotive carbs I've worked on where the valve removes from the seat easily. Mine have a small pin that appears to do the actuation vs. a larger body that floats within the seat.

After the carbs I'll check the valves, then do a compression check.

Happy motoring...

Here in Minnesota with no snow... Just last week there were a few brave at heart out on their 'cycles.... https://www.ninjette.org/forums/imag...s/clapping.gif Brrr.......

If you're under 60 Peter; you're still a kid!
Welcome!
Yes, the float needles do fall out easily. Sounds like you have some cleaning to do!
Someone will soon post the carb cleaning thread and a link to ducatiman (that's not his spelling, sorry it eludes me at the moment!) who is the resident pro carb cleaning expert service!

Welcome, Peter !!!

The Neoprene tip put pressure against an orifice drilled in the aluminum body of the carb.
That small pin has a spring in order to transmit pressure over the part without transmitting vibrations from the engine.
Inject some carburetor cleaner through the fuel supply and let it rest for a while.

Hey all, thank you for the warm welcome.

motofool thanks for the pictures. This is what I expected the valves to be like.

I was sure they would be like the car & small engine carbs that I have worked on. The extra small spring plunger at the top had me a bit confused. I had read (most likely on this forum) that the valve seat was pressed in. I was not sure if changed the design somehow.

Now to work getting the gunk out so I can get the valves out. I may try the PineSol soak.

I have other removable brass parts in the solution now.

I'm a not pushing 60 yet but it is not that far away.

I live on the north side of Minneapolis.
Great rides around here involve getting out west of here into the farm lands or heading north to the shores of Lake Superior.

Enjoy.

Jets R Us - The cheapest place for carb parts. The float pins maybe difficult to remove, depending on how gunked up they are. Don't beat on them with a BMFH, as the tabs will break and then it's time for new carbs.
