I wonder what exactly happened... he's been riding for about 6 years now, a believer in ATGATT and was wearing a Shoei helmet one of the best helmets money can buy... I don't know how fast he was going, etc. I guess it really puts things into perspective... no matter how "safe" you are there is always a risk...

RIP fellow Rider, if there is a heaven I hope you are there.

It is a common mistake and will be looked at this way. We are difficult to see when riding, except that fact.

Rest in Peace, brother.

It's certainly a shocking reminder of the risk we take every time we ride.

Samer Abdel-Wahab, age 35, passed away on Friday, January 30, 2015, after an accident in Jupiter, FL. He leaves behind his wife Heather, and their son Alister. His mother, Mariam, his father, Moustapha, his brother Karim, and his sisters Sarah and Mona also survive him. In addition, he also leaves behind many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Samer was a loving, caring, and honest man. He was a wonderful husband and father. He touched everyone he met with his kindness and sense of humor. He believed that virtue is its own reward, and his quiet generosity was testament to that.
Samer loved his work as an aerospace engineer, and was passionate about solving problems and making a difference in the world. At college and in his career, he said very little about his own accomplishments, but he was proud of his work, and successful due to his diligence and determination. He was an exceptional man in his field, and hoped to make the world a better place by putting his ideas into use.
His family wishes to thank everyone who has been so caring and supportive through this difficult time.
Samer will be remembered on Tuesday, February 3rd, 2015, at Taylor and Modeen Funeral Home, 250 Center Street, Jupiter, FL. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 PM, with a memorial service to follow from 8 to 9 PM. His family will return to Virginia with him for burial.
If family or friends wish to make a memorial donation in Samer's name, we ask that they be sent to Unicef, a charity that he supported.

Man, I cannot stop thinking about the whole thing... His last post was just 3 days before his crash.... It's crazy how short and unpredictable life can be... It could just as easily happen to any one of us... he was a smart, respectful guy who knew the importance of gear, took the safety course.

I never really talked to him, but going through his old posts he always seemed very kind and always helpful.

I wonder what he could of changed to avoided it? Maybe he was going a little too fast? I don't know. Rest easy Samer...

Sometimes the only thing that can help you avoid crashes is to see and expect them before they happen. It makes for a paranoid ride every single time you encounter a cage on the road. That being said, we are all human, and no, we can't see everything every time. This is so horribly sad. It hits home, huh?

I doubt he had a chance, he may have done everything right. Some times the way others react can be the cause. If the car had waited or went a 1/10 of a second sooner or later; or maybe the car changed it's patterned after he had seen a way throught. This would of closed the path.
In this case I bet he did everything right, the car misjudged the bike.

There are times even the smidsy can't save you, i have had someone do the same to me but seen me at the last second to stop mid lane before a crash could happen. At times you have the sun low enough in the sky to somewhat blind you to oncoming traffic, and that is a very dangerous time for riders and cars making left hand turns.

Good point, at least before he left this planet he spent his time doing something he loved.

Like CC says, nothing is promised to you. If death wants you it will find you in your comfortable home, walking in the park, inside your cage (#1 cause of death in US), and even sitting on your motorcycle.

You mine as well LIVE, this is our only chance we'll ever get.

In addition to the SMIDSY, slow down, cover the brakes, and watch the wheels of vehicles that may pull out in front of you. If those wheels turn, especially if the hood also rises from engine torque, it's time to execute the escape plan!

If the intersection Motofool posted is accurate; here is the rider's view. It's a signal-controlled intersection. Both vehicles shouldn't have been in one place and been able to make contact, unless one of them entered on a red.

Edit: Motofool had already posted a google panorama link below:

I am familiar with that intersection and visibility cannot be better, unless cars moving North along the bike blocked the view fields of rider and driver alike.

Panoramic street view of the intersection

It is very probable that the driver, arriving to the road separator, was looking to her right (to Southbound traffic) at the point of collision.

I agree, I sold my bikes at the end of the '13 riding season because of stories like this. I found that riding defensively made for a very stressful ride and when I was relaxed and really enjoying a ride I found myself lapsing in attentiveness and increasing my exposure.

As it turned out I just couldn't stop thinking about riding and I bought another bike at the beginning of last season but I really have changed my riding habits. I was doing 10k miles a year before and last season I only did about 1k. Got into dual sporting as well which keeps my on two wheels but less time on public roads. Higher risk of injury, but a lower fatality rate.

Hope everyone stays safe and uses this tragedy as a reminder of the dangers we face.

RIP Samer

How can we set up a donation system, that will directly benefit his wife and one-year-old-child?

Something in this thread said "if you'd like to help, donate to UNICEF, a charity he believed in/supported."

I say, F-that ----- how will donations to UNICEF help his wife and now-fatherless child?

Must be a way to set up a paypal account, link, address -- whatever it may be -- in which people can donate directly to his wife and child.

If I didn't have the pacific ocean and half of america between that location and I, it'd be a no-brainer to make the ride to show support.

Just batshit crazy. All his posts are endless diatribes. Some are actually entertaining but mostly batshit crazy.

How about a Go Fund Me page? we can raise the funds and then send them to his family.

Usually the donations are to help w/ the bills that come up with services and all.
If the family is OK in that dept (maybe ins or something) they will ask for donations to a cause the person would have supported.
Can't force them to accept donations directly.
