What is the AVG speed you do on the Highway
So when you get on the freeway what is the vg speed you do and what gear?
Most of my drive is freeway, I travel in 5th gear around 70 MPH. I am somewhere around 9k RPMS.

80 mph indicated.
70 mph in 5th should give you higher rpms; you may be in 6th gear.

On my morning commute I generally don't go above around 85mph indicated, which means I should be in the 75-80 range. Through my vast collection of empirical data, I have determined that the LEOs on my stretch of 495 are tolerant of any speed below 80 (speed limit is 65), but above that is the danger zone. I think I'm at about 10-10.5k RPM at that speed in 6th gear. I should probably go to a 15 tooth sprocket, but, I dunno. I'm lazy.

70-75 mph @ 7-7.5K rpms in 6th. Rarely do I use 5th in the Hwy for cruising. Roads where the speed limit is below 60 mph or steep inclines is where I use 5th or lower.

About 5-10 over the speed limit up to 70mph, 6th gear, I think around 7-9k RPM. Never really pay attention to my tach, I just shift by listening to the engine.

About 81-83 indicated. Which is about 75-78. Like one poster above, above 80 and your likely to get pulled over here. Under that and never an issue. Limit is 65 in my area.

a little faster than I should.. I typically hit 90 at least once in my commute, unless I take back roads, then I'm driving a little slower but having a lot more fun

Either your tach is off or your clutch is slipping.

Now when I am doing this it's in the morning. In the afternoon if I did this I would be around 12k RPMS. I am not sure why I run higher RPMS in the after noon than I do in the morning..

I tend to go maybe 5-6 mph over the speed limit, otherwise you get impatient folks riding your bumper.
When I'm on the freeway, I'm usually on vacation and not in a hurry to get anywhere.

Typically 5-8 over. If I have a rabbit (aka, a car going significantly faster), I'll usually pace them from a safe distance so the LEOs spot them first.
I save the fast stuff for the way out backroads, or the really fast stuff for the track, though. My general rule is: never more than ~70% of what I feel I'm capable of on the streets. On some backroads that I know well, I'll push that up to 85-90%, but I always try to leave room for the unexpected **** (we have a road around here we call Dead Animal Memorial Road for a reason....). I only go full out on the track. |

I plan on going lower than the 14/42 as I can hit 90 real easy in 6th real easy. I hit 110 on the speedo but it took me a bit.
I thought about goint to a 14/39. not sure if I would sufer on hills when at a stop though. Quote:

Good info man,
I will look in to this. RIght now I know the bike is runnnig great. The only issues I have had is, not being able to install a 15t front sproket. Which I think I know why now. I bought it used and after looking at the shift pedel it looks bent. So I am thinking that that is why it wount go above 2nd gear with the 15t front sproket. The other issue is the tach showing higher RPMS in the after noon. My MPGs are at 60.2 and that is pretty good considering how I ride my 250, which is fast. Quote:

Either the flow of traffic in the fast lane or 10-15mph over posted. 90% of the time I am riding with the flow of traffic.

Where do you get this part. I just called my local store and they told me to adjust my idle knob in the after noon and again in the morning to fix the issue.
Go figure. Quote:

Like a couple members already said, 5-10 over depending on traffic.
Not anything to crazy, just enough to keep the slow pokes behind me.

I have 12' with stock sprockets and I don't think I can't hit 100 indicated with out being into the redline by at least 500rpms, 110 and I would have to be past 14k I would imagine. Depends on how I feel about that particular stretch of highway (5-0 presence ). Rarely under 80mph indicated regardless generally a bit faster

My commute is 30% 6 lane freeway (3 each way), 50% 2 lane highway (1 each way). The freeway bit is 80-85 average indicated but the highway part is only 45-65 depending on traffic.

65mph speed limit here on the interstate (4 lanes each direction). Most motorists go 70-75mph (according to GPS in my car) in the fast lane. I do the same in my car. Tons of state troopers around my area.
On the bike, I'm in lane #2 going 70-80mph (indicated). Everyone here seems happy with that. This way I don't get passed often enough. Yet, I'm not going slow enough to slow down traffic (or have to stay in the right lanes and have to worry about cars entering the interstate). I adjust my speed when passing others. Making sure I never stay in someone's blind spot for more than a second or two. Basically I just follow the flow of traffic and adjust speed and lane position as I see fit. |

@dabule1
Here is the thing, since i have owned the bike I have figured out how to do a lot of stuff on my own that I used to be scared to do. For example adjust the chain. I did that, so if I can do that I am more than sure once I replace the shift mech. Because it was bent. I am sure I can do it my self. After watching them do it and all the stuff I have learned I should be able to do it my self.... Quote:

Faster than the speed of traffic. Considerably.
Obviously this is an area of roadway with no speed limits whatsoever --- and I am not breaking any laws whatsoever, for the sake of discussion. Pinned in 6th pushing 13.8krpm... usually not enough power to break 93 going 'up' the highway... slight incline. Coming 'down' the highway, I keep my penor tucked at 93.. The bike just feels a little too squirrely over 95... the wobbing over road imperfections and the lack of power to just "power through the wobble". 93 feels comfortable and safe, I'd say that's cruising altitude. JUST TO BE CLEAR -- those are the readings off my speedo, which is miscalibrated on the high side, just like yours. So when I say 93, I mean more like 85 ACTUAL speed.

My front tire is in good condition, pretty new (rear tire changed at same time, and it's just starting to square off a little on the side I don't lean as far.) -- Air pressures are never more than one or two psi off spec when I check it.
Just checked the front wheel/bars for side to side play... none found. Anything else to check? ^^^

5-10 over the posted speed limit, or with the flow of traffic if there is any. Around town on my commute this typically means 80mph, at which point I'm hitting 10-11K on the tach thanks to my fat arse.
Otherwise I prefer to take it a little slower. 65-70 on the open highway, a bit more on the interstate. What's the rush? |
