WR250R/X

So last weekend I went on a ride with C-Dog and he mentioned the WR250R and that got me thinking. I did a quick google search and then read some articles.

F*** I want one, the internet can seriously harm my saving habits.

It would have to be a second bike, so it'll take some saving but I'm hoping to get one.
(Maybe I'll sell a bicycle and be half way there.)

Does anyone ride a dual-sport as a second bike and have an opinion?

Hell yeah! I got a KLX250SF. Love it! I will always own a dual sport or supermoto. Trying to get rid of my Ninja to pay for some mods for the KLX now.

I looked at it before I got the DRZ400SM.

The DRZ has more modding potential and is easier to make some make more power. But they are too under powered for me to have just it. I would love another as well as the 636 though.

I'm a slightly biased source. It's pretty similar to a ninja performance wise. Although stock vs stock a wrx is going to be a wee bit faster acceleration wise. On roads under 70 mph they are pretty quick. It's a much more modern feeling motorcycle than a drz, better weight centralization so it feels lighter than a drz400. It has all the limitations of a ninja 250. It isn't fast, it might do 100mph, but the suspension, brakes, and handling has waaay more potential than the playskool pogo crap on the 250/300.

But let me give the best dose of reality I heard about motards over the weekend from someone who owns a couple street motards. They aren't magic pills for going fast. I read on forums and hear people say if I had a motard I would go so much faster in the turns. If someone isn't fast to begin with, they most likely won't even be able to begin to exploit a motards strengths. You won't suddenly be backing it in and spinning up the rear and doing wheelies for miles...especially on a wr250x. I've only seen a couple guys going "fast" in the streets on motards. Out of the few I've seen most riders just do wheelies and are not blowing by sportbikes like everyone claims these things do.

They aren't comfy for long trips, two up is out of the question, and they are slow compared to a sportbikes. The wind will hammer you on the freeway too.

With that said I would love to own a wr250x ONLY AS a ninja 250 replacement. It would make a great commuter bike to compliment a more functional bike like a sv650 or some 600.

Back on topic the wr250x is very much like a ninja 250 compared to its real sport bike counterpart. I wouldn't get a wr250 as a second bike if I already had a ninja 250. The 250 does highway and higher real world speeds much better than a wr250x. The motards are god mode in the city but aside from breaking every law city riding is boring. They do reward you really tight canyon roads and compliment a safe fast street riding technique. They stop hard and change directions wicked fast. So late apex, get em stood up and on the gas ASAP is the way to ride these things. If I were keeping my ninja 250 and wanted the full supermoto experience this is what I would do. Pick up a high maintainence husqvarna 511smr, ktm 450r, husaberg 570 or if you like using warranties a lot an aprilia sxv550 aka the grenade. Those bikes will wheelie on power in 3rd, stop so hard your retinas will detach, and if you got the skills win expert open motard class on Sunday and get you arrested Monday commuting to work.

This is exactly how I feel now. 2 years ago-ish I went from a 600 at that point to a WR250R as an only bike. I wasn't happy with it as my only bike. But as a second bike it would be awesome for lots of things. Commuting, going to school on, getting some groceries with a backpack, riding around town/city, etc.

But your scenario is what I really want to do. My ZX6 plus a WR250R or X to compliment it. I wish I hadn't sold my WR250R, but luckily I got to experience it and got a taste of Dual Sports. Which makes me want one again!

I've been considering selling the 250r for one of these.

I haven't ridden on the highway in about a year. It's all city commuting, and I follow "rules of the road" 95% of the time. I don't lane split, etc.

I took my MSF course on one and had a freaking blast. I hopped on my ninja after a day on the dual and I felt like I lost a lot of ability to do anything fun. The dual felt more stable in corners, etc.

Just kinda torn between drz400 or wr25x (in supermoto trim).

I owned a WR250X. Great, solid bike for what it is and it has the potential to make an excellent commuter. The main downside to it is the power and it has very little; folks are lucky to squeeze out low 30's with bolt on parts.

It was a fun bike to run around on but I quickly found the power completely underwhelming in nearly every aspect except taking it to and from work.

I would absolutely take it over the heavy tank of a DRZ400.

In the end, I turbocharged the 250x, enjoyed it awhile longer and then sold it for an SXV550 (which is NOT a great bike to commute on).

Your sxv is a very cool bike. I'm not mocking you but how often do you ride that bike?

Maybe once or twice a weekend, racking up about 30-50 miles a ride.

I thi'd go with a mild off-road tire if I got one. I'm not really too concerned with power either (that's what my fz6 is for) as I'd probably just use it to ride the local dirtbike trails around my area or for my 7 mile commute.

Btw, the SXV550 is sweet!

A friend has the r and the x. In addition to 11 other bikes. He even takes it to the track when I think he should take his Ktm 690. Any way he really has fun on them. Especially on poor Rhode Island back roads.

I would like a drz400sm or a wr450 if only I could get it street legal.

I also really want to get supermoto. I love the look of the SXV's, but I heard the maintenance on them is pretty involved.

Change the oil every 700-1000 miles but then again it only takes about a quart each time.

It's a price you pay for 290lbs and 60+hp at the rear wheel.

Doesn't it require frequent valve checks as well?

it suggests them but many don't bother since you're only going to get 10k-15k out of the engine before needing a rebuild.
