Maybe those are some cheap chinese wheels that he got somewhere? Not many sportbikes come with chrome wheels stock.

could be the chroming process weakened and made them brittle.

power rating= rating method is.

apply more power until catastrophic failure.

you have now reached your peak power rating and exceeded it.

-something made that wheel fail.
Ive seen wheels smashed to **** during accident but never come apart like that.
chroming process or something.

May it be that the chain did it?

There is no reason for the chain to be off the sprocket.

Been thinking about this randomly. Maybe it was over the weight limit?

It looks like there is a bit of surface corrosion on the inside of the wheel, but certainly not enough to do... that...

Come to think of it, in the old days I remember seeing a set of spoon sports sw88 replica wheels (Cast aluminium Rota Slipstreams in flat black) doing that on a turbocharged civic hatch, but we are talking about significantly more torque than what your average R1 is putting to the wheels.

All the same, glad he got it to the side of the road rubber side down though!

Doubt it, the wheel came forward and looks like it jammed up into the swingarm. There's going to be so much slack on the chain at that point that it's bound to jump off. Additionally, at that point, the rear sprocket is not going to be aligned, which will also make the chain jump.

Couple of points: Those rims have most likely been worked on (chromed/electroplated?), possibly aftermarket. It's an older model R1, so they are what, about 10 years old? I would have to look at the fracture lines with at least a 10x magnifying lens, or better, under a 100x or so scope to be able to see if it was a typical fatigue failure (my bet), or some kind of catastrophic exceedence of the metal limits. Most likely it was initiated by metal fatigue. Once that crack growth starts (and chrome plating can hide a propogating crack), then it can be a surprisingly short time to total failure. This is why aircraft have such specific inspection intervals for various parts of the structure.

Root cause analysis of structural failures/incidents is one of the parts of my job (aircraft).

Coulda been worse:

Yami rims, especially the older R1, are by far the most lightest rims from all Japanese bikes (they come pretty close to Ducati rims)...

I remember the video to that. It had something to do with improper engineering or manufacturing of the magnesium rims that they were experimenting with or something.
