After Subaru had the decade long head gasket debacle I will never recommend one. Now the new cars have oiling problems and eat the pistons....plenty of TSB's about it. Sorry, not a fan. All these Subaru's have the issue, talk about a crap load of bull spit! Guaranteed replacement by 120K miles.
These vehicles all have cylinder head gasket related issues: Impreza 1999 to 2011 Forester 1999 to 2010 Legacy 2000 to 2009 Outback 2000 to 2009 Baja 2003 to 2006 That said..... Scion SC or TC is a fun little scoot. Hyundai Genesis Turbos are fun too. 350Z would be a grin maker also!

Our Honda CR-V has been running like a champ since 2002 (big enough to carry a bicycle inside, or you can get racks for outside). We also have an electric Spark, which is fantastic but may not be the best choice if it's your only car (about a 85-90 mile range before you need to charge). Had good luck with Toyotas previously.
Hope you find something great! |

Some did yes, the 2.5 had head gasket issues but the 2.2 not so much. And some have oiling problems but not all. Kinda like Honda's eating automatic transmissions. Certainly a stain on the record but doesn't make all their cars unreliable.

They also had to have a class action lawsuit filed against them in regards to the oil issues, they were denying owners warranty coverage for an issue that should have been covered. Like I said, I cannot in good faith recommend someone buy one. I know they're popular cars but they also screw people over big time. Quote:

That being said, yes - the head gasket issue was not a good thing - and the piston ring issue as well. Doesn't mean everything the manufacturer makes is garbage. I mean Subaru has consistently ranked on the higher end of the Consumer Reports Reliability Survey for years.

S2000s are lots of fun. If you stance it and stretch it and poke it and such, please never mention such in any place that I might read it. The world is a terrible enough place already.

Just did some work for a guy that had a supercharged S2000 that previously dyno'd at 455 HP, before making the most recent intercooler and piping improvements.
Should be a scary-fast fun little car! If I was buying a fun/cheap/small car right now I'd probably go with a Focus ST or Fiesta ST. Maybe just slightly over your price-range though. |

Did we all just ignore the "carry a bike" section of the requirements or are we allowed to add a bike rack?

However, being a mechanic and seeing the issues they've had, it really irks me that a head gasket issue went on for 12 years, especially after they identified it. IMO, it should have been a warranty repair under another class action suit. I mean, that's the heart and soul of a car! I told my sisters friend not to buy one, she did. Asked how many miles were on it, she said 95K. I told her to expect the head gaskets to go soon. They did, within 8K miles. Something like a $2500 repair bill on a car she just bought. Ugh. Just makes me sad. I really want to like them but I can't. But I digress, rant over. PS: WRX STI's are some mean MOFO'S!

If you're determined to carry a bicycle, you can do it with just about any car. I'm pretty sure rojoracing53 does it with a motorcycle. So it's not worth addressing unless the OP has some further clarification to add.

bike rack wont work but a rear hitch mount rack will. so no fancy center mount exhausts if the bike can't fit inside. but tbh i would great prefer being able to lock it inside.

My buddy with an FRS recommends the BRZ instead. Maybe it's just this one, but the Toyota dealer doesn't seem to know much about it. He thinks he'd feel more comfortable going with the brand that made the drivetrain than the one that made the body.
A few months ago, I borrowed my cousin's Focus for a couple weeks, and I couldn't stand it. I'd much rather have my base model Cobalt. Depending on your driving patterns and living situation, check out used Volts. They're getting quite cheap around here. They're not your typical zippy little car, but the low center of gravity and huge torque make for a decent driving experience. A green sticker and free/cheap refueling might be a nice side effect.

I got one of these. Fun slow car with tons of cargo room. I've had three mountain bikes in the back of mine before but had the rear seats taken out. It'll fit two bikes in the back with the seats folded down. I recently bought a hitch and hitch mount bike rack though for convenience. Was tired of taking the front wheel on and off and having to realign the brake caliper on my mountain bike each time.
There are a bunch of cars in that price range. If it was me. I'd get a Miata but that's because I'd keep my Fit for hauling stuff. I wouldn't get a Mini. They aren't that reliable and parts aren't that cheap for them. |

thats what the quick release lever on the side where the cable attaches is for. with that open when you take the wheel out it wont move the brake caliper adjustment.

The Scion TC is just a very uncomfortable toyota corolla. My head hit the roof in my friends' several times, no legroom. I'm 6 feet tall, and that's a tiny bit bigger than some people but I don't really consider myself a tall person. I don't have these problems in a Miata. If a Miata is more comfortable than a car that's somehow larger than it, the TC is doing something wrong.
