High Mileage Ninjettes
I'm in the process of selling my '09 with 18K + miles on it.
Always properly maintained it feels better than new to me. Can anyone else offer info on how many miles they have on a new-gen. Generally, people seem to think that a bike is shot at 10k but modern bikes seem to last almost as long as cars...or am I just lucky so far ? |

My old Ninjette had around 7500 miles before I traded it in.
Over 6k on the new bike. My goal is 100k. |

Maintenance is the name of the game here. From what I'v read replacement engines can be had for cheap compared to a new bike as well. I wouldn't worry about mileage personally.

I've got over 15,000 on my 2010. Proper maintenance (I put mine through a lot more abuse than most folks) is definitely the key.

43,993.2 miles on my '06 as I type this. Just got done with valves and general maintenance, new rear tire goes on tomorrow in preparation for an upcoming multi-state ride. Got the bike and started riding in spring '09, it had 2k miles on it then.

Who thinks that? It's all down to the owner and maintenance: I've seen bikes with 80,000 in good shape, and bikes that are failing apart at a tenth of that.

Wow, its amazing seeing these numbers on these engines. I have a shy of 7k miles. Most of my miles come from short trips and commuting (40 mi a week). I do enjoy doing those nice long trips 300-600

Looking at these uber high mileage on young bikes makes me wonder how long it should take me to get to 100k. Playing with excel shows I am averaging about 1300/month. If I can keep that up, in four years I should roll over my odometer.
COOL!

My mileage varies temendously depending on the time of year.
In the winter I use my motorcycle strictly for commuting, which is about 12 miles round-trip, so that's only about 250 miles per month. Throw in the occasional short weekend jaunt when the weather is sunny and well above freezing, and my mileage is maybe 300-400 miles per month. In the summer, however, the weather is much nicer, so my car sits and gathers dust. I also throw in some weekend getaways, etc. and my bike might get a 1000-1200 miles per month. I haven't done any lengthy trips in some time; I have a couple weeks off in late-May and I'm hoping for decent weather. If it's decent for riding I hope to do a road trip of maybe 1500 miles during that time off. I once read an article in Cycle World years ago that according to service records from various dealerships, the average motorcycle in the USA only gets rode about 1000 miles per year.

my 2008 ninja has now 82,000 miles. And my 02 has 28,000 miles.
Id be horribly pissed off if a bike was "Shot" at 10,000 miles. What a horrible thing. I think i would stop riding at that point and just drive. It seems machines are pretty reliable. |

I'm turning 21k soon. And most of that is WFO in 6th pinned at 92mph pushing the headwind.
Not trying to brag but I don't think anyone rides their bike like I do. WFO pretty much all the time unless I'm braking. Someone told me at a racing school once.... "you're either accelerating, or braking. There's no inbetween. If you're coasting, you're not racing properly." My post pertains to track riding, obviously.

I just had this thread on the other ninja 250 board.
Got talking to a couple guys that had a bit over 80k. Said that up to around 50k you don't have anything but regular up keep. Then the timing chain guides start to wear out and need replaced. The valves should be low by 60k. And other than that your good to go. So once in 100k you will have to open the crank case. Or simply eBay a motor for about 300 and pop it in. I wish my car was this reliable. BTW, I have 20k and my motor is clean enough to lick inside. If your into licking motor parts that is. |

I agree that beefing up the internals would be great. It wouldn't really matter to 99% of the bikes made though.
I have seen, more than once, a 20 year old bike with over ten owners that still has less then 10k on the clock. And on top of that the scrap yards are packed with so many they don't even want them. It took almost a month for me to find a differential for my supra, then it $500, high miles and was shipped across country. It took me 2 weeks to find a ninja in my area for $300 that was the color I wanted....yes I found enough that I was like, naw I don't want a green one I want a black one. You have almost unlimited, almost new parts so why bother doing any work on it unless you want to? It will cost the same to get a newish motor as it will to have the dealer adjust the valves. |
