oil leak = lowside

so i was heading into work and spun the rear out. on the 250? spun the rear out? something sounds fishy, right? so i bang the handlebars back into place and push it to the gas station im in front of and check it out and everything seems fine to me but i'm all hopped up on addrenaline at that point and assume i just gave it the gusto over some paint (i left a wicked blacky) so i continue on my way to work after making some roadside repairs (ducttape the headlight back on using spare ducttape from the gauge being held on by ducttape) and when i get to work i notice that my rear tire is basically completely covered in oil. i find that my oil filter cover is leaking over basically everything and IS NOT SAFETYWIRED!!!!!! it looks like after doing my last oil change before the track and getting it all back together and even going through tech inspection nobody noticed the missing safetywire. i blame myself. but i'm glad it didn't happen a few days ago at the track. PSA: tighten dem bolts.

most of the damage went to the throttle and the exhaust. you can see in that photo it was still leaking oil and i just didn't even notice it.

any connection to this photo from a while ago? Does it explain why area is so dirty? I think you mentioned you had just cleaned it recently and it was odd that this area was so dirty so fast, kinda looks oily as well?

Glad it wasn't worse. Any risks to the forks during a low side like that?

so i just went out and fixed the leak. i tried to get the oil off the rear tire but it is like soaked in or something. i'm going to go back with water to douse it. the front end doesn't look terrible. some rash on the fork leg. but it is making a weird noise. it sounds like a bearing ball has a flatspot maybe, or the speedo gear is messed up.

so it looks like my front wheel is a bit ****ed up. off center a few mm from the hub. i slid it into a curb and the front wheel hit. didn't think it hit that hard but i guess it did

i remember getting pissed trying to push the throttle back because it was getting dragged by the ground and pulling to wot which just made the stupid rear tire spin more on the ground so i was grabbing the clutch but that shot the revs way up and i was thinking oh **** not without oil cause its on its side. and the dash lights were going nuts i was like nooooooo my engine! luckily i got the throttle back and then turned it off.

this guy in a fedex van was behind me. i think i surprised him. he was like "DUDE are you alright?" kinda funny

the leather will probably turn out not so bad but those gashes in the little "metal" thing (i think its actually plastic... the inside is white) are kinda deep and arne't going to just buff out.

it was service tech error. it just so happens that is the same person as the rider. so you might as well call it rider error.

Which jeans were you wearing, and about how fast were you going?
Also, were you wearing those Alpinestars when you broke your foot?

lol no, i was wearing some newbalance running shoes when i broke my foot. the jeans are circa skateboarding jeans and are rated at 200d. it was near the top of first so i'm guessing between 15mph and 20mph. i only slid maybe 15 feet. looking at the boots, they actually took a lot of damage but held up remarkably well i'd say especially considering this is their third time through the ride.

I feel yer pain, bro. My chief mechanic sucks too. Lazy, no good, doesn't even have a clue what he's doin....

Sucks that I'm my own crew chief.

Anyone in southern OR want to be a trackside crewchief? I pay admission to the track, and buy the beer. Hell, I'll offer to split any winnings, but that's gonna be a long way off, if ever.

Nothing fishy your just a noob rider. You may want to get a 50cc moped as a 250 sounds like it has to much power for you.

Same thing happened here. Had an unfortunate incident with my last oil filter cover (first time wrenching when I was 15) and I had broke it by overtightening.

Replaced it with the new 08+ models version, and for some reason I am still having issues with it leaking through the oil filter bolt. Not sure what's happening there. Might there be a crusher washer missing?
