2000 ZX-12R in Storage for 9 Years

Last year I acquired the bike with 6793 miles on the odometer. It was stored in doors, since 2006! Over the past few months as time permitted, I changed the plugs and put a little oil in each cylinder while the plugs were out. I removed all the gas, which looked and smelled fine. Using my battery charger, I turned the engine over a few times.

This past weekend I changed the oil and filter, using Shell Rotella 5W-40 Synthetic. I added 2 gallons of premium gas and half a can of SEAFOAM. Yesterday, I put in a fully charged new battery and after a few stumbles, the Beast started right up. The oil light stayed on, so I shut it down and loosened the oil filter and started the engine. After pumping a little oil out, I stopped the engine and added more oil to the crankcase. Restarted the engine and oil light went out. The bike is running great now!

The oil sensors were weird on ZX-12R's. Many false positives with the light popping on, even when the oil level and pressure is fine. Would happen to mine in wet weather for some reason; it has to do with the mounting of the sensor.

I hope I never get old and married and allow myself to let a bike sit for 9 years.

But damn. Great find! Pics?

Your sir, are a lucky man, amazing those carburetors didn't need a cleaning. Maybe the previous owner actually did winterize the bike properly.

The 12R's are FI; the ZZR-1200's of a similar year still had the carbs.

Skins are still off and I just received new Battlax B016 Pro tires yesterday. Reluctant to use the old tires, even though the rear is still holding pressure. Here's what it looked like on my trailer. Has a full Muzzy exhaust and Power Commander III, etc. Also, in the process of rebuilding all the calipers. Ordered a replacement Zero Gravity Touring windshield. Original shield has a decal that someone tried to scratch off. All Kawi decals were previously removed by the owner.
