Highsided/Lowsided after a tank slapper

First ride of the year, on my friend's xr 650l. Got into a bad tank slapper and tried my best to recover. I was going about 55 mph. Pictures to come.

Edit: Wearing full gear except for pants. Had some aeropostale jeans than held up surprisingly well. Ruined my brand new gloves and helmet. Disappointed in the quality of my spidi's.

Did it happen for no reason, or was it from a wheelie?

He's a really good friend, so no haha. He's getting money from me whether he wants it or not.

I have no great pictures of my gear. But I can say now, my next jacket is going to be leather. This was a really rough crash (asphalt), and it destroyed all my gear. Brand new icon airmada and spidi gloves ruined. Actually a little disappointed with gloves. They tore up a lot, and these were supposed to be my track gloves. I'm glad I didn't crash at the track with these, where I can reach speeds much quicker than fifty five.

Injuries include lots of small bruises on my butt, thighs and knees. Small burns from clothing where I made contact (everywhere haha). My right elbow and shoulder is very swollen and is aching. Can't wait to wake up I'm the morning.

The bike slid for quite a bit. No serious damage. I still am not sure what caused it. I heard it may have been mechanical error - and I am inclined to believe it, since I experienced some wobbles earlier. I didn't make anything of it.

Again, I'm fine. More pictures soon.

Ah, bummer. Good that you dodged a bullet and that you're okay. Good that you're going to upgrade your gear. Leather is where it's at.

Can't say it enough... buy good gear and wear it!

@nickjpass Sorry to hear man. As for the spidi gloves, that sucks. From what Ive seen, the Spidi gloves dont hold up very well in crashes. I have a bud who crashed once in a pair, and the seams ripped apart and he broke his fingers. Were talking Spidi cabo track gloves, their top of the line ones.

Having said that, get yourself a pair of nice, proven gloves, even if its a little steeper. IMO, its okay to go cheap in things like helmets, boots, leathers, but never cheap out on the gloves.

Heal up, feel better.

Damn man, at least your gear helped. It could have been a lot worse had you been a squid, more than likely turned into calamari (sorry, bad pun). Any pics of the jacket? is it a textile jacket?

tough break, glad you came out in relatively good shape.

Perhaps you were just unfamiliar with how that bike behaves, if I remember correctly the rake and trail on the xr650l is on the very low side making them a little less stable at higher speeds and speed wobble/tank slappers are not uncommon especially if the front end leaves the ground or gets light

Not saying this was the case but take those already low numbers and then add unknowingly selecting a tire with a profile that poorly matches the designed geometry of the bike and you can quickly go into unstable territory. That's where being familiar or unfamiliar with that particular bike could make a world of difference.

I think a lot of people put steering dampeners on these bikes to help

don't beat yourself up over it, you live to ride another day

P.S. oh yeah, how do you highside and lowside at the same time? unless you lowside then somehow catch then the bike flips over highside with you still hanging on? That just sounds amazingly terrible all at once

damn, I know that textile is not as good as leather, and can leave some burns. But sounds like it did its job and stopped him from losing layers of skin. I was actually just looking into mesh jackets for the summer months here in Texas, my Scorpion textile gets pretty damn hot when its 100+ out (really just from having to sit a stops lights, once at speed it is not bad) I am scrapping that Idea, the mesh are quite a bit less material than the full textile, guess I will deal with the heat, my fault anyways for buying all black gear . I may just end up looking for a full textile jacket with a lot of white on it to help deflect sun rays. My current jacket sucks the rays in like a fatty wearing a thong. If you can't quite imagine what I am talking about, here is an example. Not in english, but I think the portuguese makes it even better.

....and another clip, why? because it is one of the funniest parts on any simpsons episode........ever

Yeah the bikes geometry has a lot with to do with what happened. It was the revit jacket that I bought from burning scooter. I have more pictures but I am not part of the PC master race, so its annoying to post lol

I thought spidi was good. lol probably going with dainese or something of the sort this time.

Also what I meant about the high side and lowside was that I don't remember if i was tossed or if it lowsided. I think I was tossed though.

Dammit kid stop trying to off yourself.

It's much nicer living a long, healthy, injury free life.

My knox gloves (biomechs) go through a lot of **** and hold up very well. Palm sliders, wrist protection, seams never separate. Love them. FYI.

I had a tank slapper at 70mph this spring. Scorpion textile jacket held up great minus my shoulder getting a light scrape. Leather Scorpion gauntlets, Scorpion full face helmet, AGV sport mesh pants, and Sidi Cobra Air Boots left me without hurt everywhere else.

Bad luck with the gear mate.

600 dollars worth of gear is better than the medical bills. An ambulance alone is over a grand.

what size jacket do you wear? If i remember correctly you are on the smaller side no? I have a spare used leather jacket i picked up this off season just because i thought it was a good deal. It is a large. It fits me well, i am like a 42 - 44 in mens suit, i wore it yesterday for the first time, i like it, it just needs cleaned up a bit. Let me know if you are interested i'd practically give it to you.

I have those same Cortech boots and they saved my foot from a lowside. Good gear.

Those Sidi gloves are dissappointing though.

Most textile jackets are only good for one crash anways.

I just moved up to a size 38 from 36. Thank you for the offer very much. I appreciate it. You're welcome to recommend me a good leather jacket though.

Yeah. They're good boots. Only complaint is that the veclro doesn't stick as well as before once I rode in the rain a few times. Maybe cleaning it would help. They've survived two crashes. I will be retiring them I think.

*Spidi

The jacket didn't tear at the seams though! Haha. My last crash wasn't as bad, but the textile jacket I had then was an Icon Compound with leather impact zones. I still have it, but its too small now.

A friendly reminder when it comes to tank slappers, if you don't get thrown off, after riding it out, be sure to pump your front brakes to ensure you still have feedback!
