Cush Drive Questions

Just got new sprockets for my 2008 Ninja 250r. I had them replaced at a shop and after I came to pick it up the worker told me that my cush drive rubbers need to be replaced. Is the guy bullshitting me?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

he could be, but not sure why unless they plan to really stick it to you with parts and labor costs. They are just rubber inserts, the bike is an 08, and a 250 at that so it is not like they see a ton of instant torque to beat them up. I guess they could dry rot? Take a look for yourself. Either way don't pay them for jack unless it is next to free, can get used rubberz off ebay for a few bucks and it is easy to do yourself replacing them. Most difficult thing about the whole process is setting chain tension and axle alignment when finished and that isn't exactly difficult.

note there is typically a little play in the cush drive regardless of good rubbers or not, perhaps this guy is unaware of that and thinks it should be tighter? Did he say what was wrong with it?

Are the ones on ebay worth buying if they are used themselves? Can you not buy them new?

You can shim the cush drives, basically they pull off the wheel with the sprocket still on, you can add shims as needed- some have made shims with milk bottles, just stuff them on the sides of the wheel/cush drive. If you got to the faq there is a procedure- how to.

When you go to shim them up, snap a pic and post it. If they are in terrible shape (rot, rips, and such) or missing one(s), you will need new or good shaped used ones.

I wish someone would make some nice urethane inserts to replace the cush rubbers.

You can get a set for a Busa for like $50, wish they were more available for other bikes

I tossed an idea for a company to make them for the 250 but there wasn't a demand to equate the costs

you could always pour your own using the stock parts as a mold... wouldn't even have to worry about release agents since its already in its final position

I want to mess around and pop wheelies. Wont that cause excessive wear and tear on the rubbers? So would it be safer to purchase less used ones then to shim them?

Also what do yous think about theses?

if i needed to replace my cush drive $11 would work along with some cut up credit cards to shim the drive.
