Crashed the ninja! Part out or sell whole? Advice requested!
Low sided up near Big Bear, CA. Rocks in the road that came down from a cliff - avoided two, hit the third. Option 1: stand it up to swerve & go into oncoming traffic/off a cliff. Option 2: clip the rock, low side - better of the two, but ouch! Minor road rash on my knee, lots of bruises but thankfully my gear held up!
The ninja is kind of in rough shape. It went down on the left side, most of the plastics are rashed or cracked. The gauge cluster is hanging loose, the wind screen is still up on Big Bear. Left mirror shattered, one rear turn signal shattered as well. The forks are bent, but I managed to get them straight enough to ride home. Frame appears to be straight. The ultimate question - sell as a crashed bike (its SoCal, there's probably good potential here) or part it out? Engine has 3300 miles on it (crazy low for a 2006) & it runs great. Still got me 45 miles home after the crash. Advice is welcome! I'll try to add some pictures once I get them off my phone. |

Might be worth more parted out...or someone would want it as a track bike?
Put an ad up for a whole bike...if no one bites, part it

Are you ok?
Could go either way, depends on the pics.

Sorry to her about this. It's really hard to say what you should do until pictures are up. On a side note, any damage to yourself?

Did the rocks fall as you were riding? Just curious...
...must have been scary. I'd probably need a new pair of drawers.

Pictures of the bike after I got it home. I could post what happened to my legs too - but its a bit graphic. Road rash on one knee, mostly just bruises.
Had on a leather jacket that took a ton of damage (but saved my skin!), knee high boots that also took on a lot of damage, jeans (not riding jeans - dumb dumb move there, hence the road rash on the knee), gloves that almost shredded in the palms but kept my hands okay, and a helmet that got a few good scrapes. |

They must have come down shortly before I entered the corner. If much traffic would've gone around the corner, a car probably would've kicked them out of the lane. A motorcycle may or may not have missed them, depending on their line in the corner. I was closer to the shoulder - the person riding in front of me missed them, but entered the corner closer to the center line.

Heal up
if you post pictures of your wounds, you make want to link them instead of attaching them or inserted, just in case someone doesn't want to see it.

Where are you located? Apparently not Boston..
If it's close by I could take a look and let you know? Doesn't sound too bad really besides forks.

Heal up quickly! I'm sorry to hear that. Hopefully you can sell the bike and get another. I've had some similar scares up on Angeles Crest highway, but have been fortunate enough to ride away from them (so far).
Also, +1 on the injury pics! I guess links do make more sense, if only to spare the squeamish. |

Post on the ninja 250 forums.
If Somone will give you 800 for it as a track bike I think u r doing well. Parting it out I think you could make more but it's a lot of trouble. I always group parts when I sell. Makes people buy more. I parted out a snowmobile 5 year ago. Still have boxes of parts. Made more than I bought it for The key was- someone wants the hood throw in tail light for 20 someone wants gauges I throw in boogey wheels for 5 bucks each. But it's hard cause eventually u r left with stuff that you either have to give away or throw away. Also parting a bike sucks because the easiest parts to sell get broke

Props to you for riding the bike home with those injuries!
Seems like you're the type to tough it out no problem. I hope you heal well and quickly, so you can get back out on two wheels again soon. |

Sorry about the lowside and the legs. I remember the bottom part of my gloves were gone when I lowsided, I was able to save my helmet with my hands. I love GEAR. I would probably sell the whole bike first if you can, it's less hassle. Part out is another good alternative if you have the patience, and then get a used or new 300 down the line. It's all up to you, you could even revive the bike back and paint the body a different color to your liking, if you have the time.

Thanks for all the love
I'm healing up pretty well - it happened a week ago Saturday. Still some leftover bruises and one spot of road rash that just doesn't want to heal, but I'll be back on two wheels soon enough! Ended up going to a doctor earlier this week just to check out my knee - but everything is fine. Probably should've gone in the day it happened, but oh well! I got extremely lucky for how everything went down - thank heavens for gear!! |

Found the location I went down on street view. My options with rocks in the road: stand it up & swerve, go into oncoming traffic & potentially off the cliff OR hope for the best with a low side into the wall. I think I may actually have gone off the high side, considering the damage is on the left side of the bike. It was a right-handed turn & the bike landed on top of me. I was further into the curve than the bike was. Its all kind of a blur though, I couldn't be 100% sure.

Had liability only. For what I paid for the bike, cost of insurance & deductible, I would only have lost money if I crashed in the first year. Its been more than a year. :P I'm kind of a weirdo - I did an ROI on it.
TL;DR - nope! |

Are those really the only options? Motorcycles made it through safely in front of you and behind you, so what did they do differently? If you were faced with the identical scenario tomorrow, what would you do differently?

The rider in front of me entered the curve with a very different line. I tend to stay closer to the shoulder - California drivers still intimidate me (only been out here about two months). I learned very quickly that California roads aren't always maintained the best. Closer to the center is probably safer, in some cases.

I am! Looking for something that is a little bigger size-wise (ride height, not necessarily CCs). I am simply too tall for the pre-gen ninjas, I couldn't quite get it to feel right.
Going to a shop with a lot of used bikes this weekend to sit on a few, gather some thoughts, then do more research. |
