Common courtesy and respect is, for the most part, a thing of the past. It was killed by the internet with no consequences for what someone can say. So sadly yes, you need to have thick skin in this day and age. This is a double edged sword though, it makes some think its ok to be rude or cruel to other people online so in turn it make the problem worse.

I will say some people get offended for the silliest things but thats another story and not necessarily saying thats the case here.

I do agree with @csmith12 about CC. I don't believe he has ever meant any real harm, just looking to make us all laugh.

Personally i try to not post anything i wouldn't tell someone in person. But thats just me.

Yea Lee, I am sure. CC participates here mostly as comic relief. Let me give you another example; "If you find this thread offensive, you must live in one of two of the most f'ed up places on this planet; California or anywhere near Washington DC." lol

Check here and tell me what kind of comic you think he is? For a real challenge, what kind of comic am I?

@LittleRedNinjette - common courtesy & respect are most definately NOT a thing of the past, you just live in NJ (see above joke). lol Head south now!

Fair, but you may be missing the bigger picture. Those who have been reading these threads (and thousands of others) for the years we've been friendly on this site, have also voted that same user MOTM twice, as recently as June last year. Tone and intent matters, and reading each thread for the worst possible intent, instead of reading each thread for the best possible intent, can cause the same reader to have very different impressions.

The board is better off with a certain brand of quirkiness, from quite a few posters we could all name, rather than shooing them off because a minority are offended.

This is not a justification for cruelty, an acceptance of TOS violations, or even a matter of choosing favorites. But I do think you're charging up the wrong hill.

And yes, there's a reason I want to move south again.

I do think it funny when a part of the country thinks it is superior to the rest of this great country. Except the Rocky Mountain states, they are.

Superior.... My vote is TN, N.Cali, or somewhere over seas... Better roads and better weather.

For many posters, common courtesy is something they do not understand, and what they do not understand they cannot do.

Whether he's been voted MOTM or President doesn't alter the facts in this matter.

Many here write in a manner that would (hopefully) cause their mothers to blush. When did we reach the point that it is acceptable to post offensive, off-color, sexually explicit, hurtful language and think it is cool or acceptable?

/begin bluntness...

I am not sure when the last time you went outside and interacted with the rest of the world was, but you might consider doing it more. Just be careful out there, it aint always nice...

I see more offensive things on fb on a daily basis than here (see mcm, selfy sun, hump daaayyyy!!! ect, ect). Mostly posted by females fyi... Not that it matters anyway. Do you unfriend everybody?
I see more offensive sexual content on prime time tv than here. Do you turn off nearly every major network channel? History channel maybe?
More off-color jokes come from the "Big Bang Theory" and "2 Broke Girls" than here. Do you write the networks and ask them to tone down the jokes?
You kinda get the idea....

In the end, you didn't make the rules, I didn't make the rules, the society we live in made the rules. You are more than welcome to disagree with them at any time at your will. This forum has a feature called "ignore". You are more than free to use it at any time you feel a user(s) have crossed the lines of your values and beliefs. Then, you can then view the forum through the filter of "unicorns and rainbows".

I leave you with this, because I am officially out of this thread, it's draggin' me down. Out of the links you referenced, this one is the only successful troll thread in his 7,981 posts. Gratz must finally be in order.

Okay. Fine. I'll bite.

I think flitecontrol needs to radio back to major tom and get a situation report because the times have changed and his/her understanding of this may be upgraded by recognizing and acknowledging the chip on his/her shoulder.

Me personally --- I like to think that I can speak on the matter because I have a chip on BOTH shoulders. In that respect, I am equally well-rounded. Hey, maybe I'm just a square.

If anyone would like to clearly identify exactly what exacerbates their frustration with the world... if anyone would like to step up to the stage and type out exactly HOW and WHY this modern world frustrates them, please be my guest. Me for one, could list endless problems -- but in doing so, I would continue to be none other than the source of the problem which we can't seem to identify.

I operate on a very simple premise. That which bothers you most... I'd like to potentiate it. I'd like to find the very thing which rubs you the wrong way, and then hook it up to a power tool and rub that wound raw and chafing. I'm in this for the blood. The tears. The heartbreak. I'd like to see the things that bother you, and then make them worse. Faaaar worse.

My motive is simple. This is how social progress is made.

There are two ways to solve any problem. The first being --- a solution! The second being... further exacerbation of the problem until a new problem arises, negating the previously accepted solution, and requiring a new solution to be designed. I like to think that I am good at solving problems. Try me.

So what is the real problem here in this thread? Our modern society thrives on identifying problems, which drives our consumerism culture. However, there comes a point in which we must recognize that identifying more problems is not what our best minds should be focusing on. I propose a shift in thinking --- let's stop feeling important by putting others down. Let's stop feeling important by pointing fingers.

Instead, let's try and come together and come up with a solution.

Then again, a new problem arises. The new problem is simple.

We haven't identified the problem.

How do you make society's rules better. One post at a time.

In CC's defense he did also post this:

I like Aerosmiths music for the most part but not top of my list, the older stuff is best. I don't realy have an opinion one way or the other on Steven Tyler himself.

I'm so old I remember Aerosmith playing at Millis high school. I've met the toxic twins a number of times and they are motorcycle enthusiasts.

I am not sure when the last time you went outside and interacted with the rest of the world was, but you might consider doing it more. Just be careful out there, it aint always nice...

I interact with the world on daily basis. When I go to a store, drop stuff off at the recycler, pay my bills, etc., I don't hear people making comments that, to repeat a phrase I used earlier, would "make their mother blush". Why is it acceptable to do so on a forum? Is a forum a public place, is it a private room where we can pretty much say anything we please, or something else?

I see more offensive things on fb on a daily basis than here (see mcm, selfy sun, hump daaayyyy!!! ect, ect). Mostly posted by females fyi... Not that it matters anyway. Do you unfriend everybody?

I'm not on fb so I can't address your question. My wife is on fb, and I can assure you she wouldn't be if she were inundated with offensive posts such as you describe. Could it be that you get such posts because of your "friends"?

I see more offensive sexual content on prime time tv than here. Do you turn off nearly every major network channel? History channel maybe?
More off-color jokes come from the "Big Bang Theory" and "2 Broke Girls" than here. Do you write the networks and ask them to tone down the jokes?
You kinda get the idea....

I do watch The Big Bang Theory pretty regularly, and you are correct, there is a lot of sexual innuendo . However, I don't recall it ever reaching the point that it has in this thread. For example, one member posted that another member's mother was beside him and she did suck. That's only one example.

Yes, society makes the rules, but who constitutes society? We do, and we have the ability to influence and change society. Parents do it all the time by teaching their children the values they feel are important. People do it all the time at work, either by setting good examples or bad ones.

My father did it many years ago at a restaurant we were eating at. Several young men were at a table next to the booth where our family was seated. Apparently their language was offensive, which made my mother uncomfortable. My father got up, went over to their table, explained that their language was offensive, and politely but firmly asked them to tone it down. I remember that at least one of them apologized to my mother and assured my parents that there would be no more such talk from them.

Society is shaped in small increments. If no one tries to shape society in a manner they feel is better, it will degrade to a minimally acceptable level.

The unicorns and rainbows language didn't come from me, but I understand the writer's point.

I leave you with this, because I am officially out of this thread, it's draggin' me down. Out of the links you referenced, this one is the only successful troll thread in his 7,981 posts. Gratz must finally be in order.

I'll try. I'm frustrated that people feel it's ok to degrade others, treat them as less than equals, and just generally put their own wants above other's needs. The solution is simple, and relatively painless. Don't do it.

Taken to an extreme, it was this perverted view of others that led the Nazis and Stalin to murder millions of people because they viewed them as being of less value than themselves.

What you describe in the above paragraph is the definition of sadistic behavior, i.e., a desire to hurt others.

My motive is simple. This is how social progress is made.

I don't agree. The motive of a sadist is to feel good, and he gets that feeling from hurting others. If I'm wrong, feel free to provide the rationale that backs up your statement.

The problem with certain posts to this thread was identified early on. Several people pointed out what they viewed as a lack of civility. The solution is simple. Be civil and more sensitive to others. But that's not easy for some to do.

Beers all around!

@flitecontrol - Trust brah, I spent the entire last year interacting with people of kinds (1000 places, a million hands link in my sig). It takes all kinds. I tried my best to change people and little things here and there. I had an effect on many, some for better, others for worse. But you know what I learned... I was changed most of all. Been there, done that, still doing it. ijs...

When riding, I sometimes try to educate cagers about the dangers of following motorcycles too closely. I say sometimes because I'm not always in the right frame of mind to do this in a positive manner. On the occasions that I have, each one has expressed appreciation for learning something they weren't aware of.

You're right, changing others changes us too. Hopefully, each learns that the other is open to considering the other's viewpoint, whether they agree with it or not, and is willing to take the other's well being into consideration.

Yep. Some people suck, but most are good. Learn to find the good in everyone. Teachers have sure as hell have to.
