The whole reason it's caught on cam was because this lady is doing a documentary on a girl that went missing in spring 3 years ago. She just happend to be at the right place at the right time.

I got surgery coming Monday. I basically lost a big chunk of tendon in my foot and I'm getting like 2 screws in its place
Broken foot and stitches as well.

Hard to get a full picture of the intersection, but it looks like the bike had the right of way and the Kia Soul just came right out to make a left without stopping?

Wow. Thank goodness for someone filming right then and there. Glad the injuries weren't a lot worse.

For the more experienced riders, is there anything that could have been done? Granted the Kia came out right in front and you can see the smoke from the locked up tire. Does it look like swerving would have been effective (if enough time)? Or is this one of those the rider was screwed?

Oh man that could have ended way worse. Glad to see he got a bunch of speed peeled off before impact.

ya, looks like the Kia was making an illegal u turn across traffic. Here is what it looks like to me. The kia was traveling on the freeway access road perpendicular to the direction of the 250 rider and was making a right turn to be travelling in the same direction. It probably would have been avoidable had they continued to travel in the proper direction (same as the bike), but instead they decided they needed to be traveling in the opposite direction.

Although this image is not the exact intersection, this is a fairly typical design in Texas.

That would have been hard(impossible) for even me to have dodged. I'm good at predicting what people are going to do in advanced(to many years of racing) but when the move is on par with purposefully try to hit you at the last second then there's little you can do.

I will say the rider was moving along at a pretty good clip and would say with currently lots of people merging and turning in that area at the time, slowing slightly and coving the front brake couldn't hurt till you clear the off ramp.

Impact looks fake with how they're body just seemed to instantly stop with no bouce factor. Glad the rider was ok for the most part.

It maybe could have been prevented if he was driving more defensive.

Every time someone pulls out of a side street/garage/sidwalk I always slow down because of the chances that they would either do this, merge unto my lane, or take up parts of both lanes.

I'm not saying that I would have been able to avoid it myself 100% of the time, but this type of driving happens a lot around here, and you have to prepare for this. It reminds me of the driver who seemed like he was pulling off to the shoulder to let the biker go ahead and then he proceeds to do a u-turn.

Anyhow, I wish him luck with his injuries and a speedy recovery.

One should not make a left hand turn coming out of that driveway even if there is not oncoming traffic. Of course if everyone drove as they should, then there would be no crashes at all.

For someone being attentive, the driver gave enough hints of his/her intentions and was not moving that quickly.
Note how the car was stopped for several seconds while waiting for a chance to cross the road.

The bike was moving a little too fast for those conditions and hit the left rear tire of that ultra-short car; hence, he could have slowed down hard first and then swerve to the right to clear the rear of the car.

It seems that pure braking wouldn't have saved the day, although the distances are hard to judge due to the angle of the camera.

ouch! I recognize that street from my time in Houston too

Oh, if you don't like "I didn't see you" try "Why didn't you stop for me" -- that's what I got when I got hit by a car making an illegal turn.

i once almost had the same thing happen to me.
was exiting a gas station where a car wasn't really moving. so i walk the bike forwards past the driver side window, look and take off. as soon as i start to roll, and turn left, the car takes off and does a sharp left, and i almost clip his back tire.

the only way to avoid this is to let the erratic car go first, and watch closely.

Wow he really was lucky someone was filming when that happened. I've had a few accidents in the past and they were all other drivers faults and all but 1 driver out of 3 tried to drive away. Lucky for me i was in a car at the time and not on a bike.

Very good evidence. Hope your buddy has a speedy recovery.

Just the other day a jeep in front of me rear ended someone. Got out acted all worried and pointed to a nearby gas station as if he were going there to exchange info. He then proceeded to speed off in the opposite direction while then other driver waited at the gas station. Unfortionately for that dumb*** I took down his tag # and gave it to the other guy! And the jeep driver TOLD the other dude he was DRUNK, at 1pm on a weekday! I dont know the outcome but I hope the cops found and locked up that

If he was actually drunk he's gonna be in for some trouble.

After having a very close near miss last year. Where I swear the person looked right at me and then turned in front of me at the last second. I assume that no one sees me, and that everyone is going to pull out in front of me. I make sure that even if they do that I have a plan on avoiding them.

Slow down, cover the brakes, pay attention.

Ride like you're invisible. Be ready for any dumb ass to pull right the hell out and try to have an escape plan. Not saying I could have pulled this one off either by any means, but it's always my goal to watch for dumbasses, pretend they can't see me, and be ready to react in the safest, least-impact way possible.

THanks! The video is a damn good reminder of what we're up against. Ride as if we are invisible. All the time.
