I need to fit a 160 rear on....
For... reasons... (no really, i do need it, not just for looks) going with either a pilot power 2ct or a road3 ( or a track only tire)
Options are dropping in a 08+ rear wheel, however i thought these pinched the 160/60/17's and hurt cornering grip? (NOT AN OPTION!) Or am i going to need a different swing arm? I recall a few that were close to drop in... Once I have more of the project DONE, I'll let slip whats up -Levi |

you're on a 1990 250?
not happening on that swingarm or wheel, a 17" conversion on the 250 is tricky and pricey enough as it is so it's not really worth it to do. But if you're adamant, get a swingarm from a ninja 300 and a ninja 300 rear wheel, afaik that'll support a 160...barely the '08-'12 rear wheel is smaller than the 300 wheel

A 160/60 fits fine on a 300 rear and with room to spare in the swing arm.
No clue how to get that on a pregen though. Good luck!

the newgen swingarm is direct bolt to pregen the 300 swingarm is direct bolt to newgen (not 100% sure of this but I believe it is) therefore the 300 swingarm is direct bolt to pregen

If the 300 is a direct bolt in, i would go that route. Anyone have any measurements?
I have a swing arm option on hand that is not a bolt in.... and would go with it over the 300, if cutting is involved. Thanks! -Levi |

From what I've seen, the NewGen and 300 swingarms are basically the same, with some minor accessory mounting differences. I have a 300 chainguard/hugger on a NewGen swingarm on my 500...
You'll want a 300 or aftermarket wheel for the extra width to put a bigger tire on. FYI, that's a Pilot Power 150/60 on a Vrossi wheel from overseas.

the moto3 slicks are 120 width and will be much stickier than any dot tire.
why do you need a 160 width again? added rotation weight, larger contact patch with the same weight == less grip.... it seems like if you are trying to gain performance, you do not want to go with a +30 tire... but maybe i'm just dumb...

I do believe Levi believes he NEEDS it. I think he has a monster motor swap under wraps. I went wider and taller in the front because I like the look.

Someone nailed it! Sense it would appear that there are a bajillion options, and some very useful people, I will let slip the info, So people can provide more useful info! The motor is a CRF450R with the 12v stator added for lights, and some motor work done. Should be in the 45-55hp range at 11K, but makes amazing torque down low. ~35ftlbs at 6K and 28ftlbs as low as 4K. (The motor isn't mounted yet, but will fit, but still so much work to do, and so little time) The extra torque is what has me concerned with grip at full lean. A big thumper is different than twin up in the revs... If i can get away with a 17" 250 rims and a diablo rosso II... I am so game for dropping weight! (These tires suck in the rain btw, had um on my STR) I'm ALLLLLL ears on what would be the best tire choice for both dry street/track. And also wet commutes (this is proving hard). I would be up for a Vrossi rims or similiar, IF i could find any... Thanks guys! |

Admittedly it's a twin, but those numbers are similar to the EX500.
The 500 comes with the same 130/70 as a NewGen.

Yeah, you may appreciate a 150, but a 140 or 130 will be fine.
90's era 600's ran 160's or 150's iirc. They're putting down more than that in the torque department. Someone check me though, I may be wrong |

Interesting!
Pretty much all the super motoard guys run 150-170 rears (~165 ). They could lace up what ever rim they wanted, to run what ever tire they wanted.... Also Dunlop lists the ~160 size slicks for Super motard track use. and not the Moto3/125gp tires.... This is what started the question.... However I wonder if this is down to gearing? They usually run a 14/44 ish gearing for sumo racing.... So a lot more torque to the wheel! I plan on running a 15/ 38-40 type gearing, should keep the motor from being to high strung on the freeway. (subject to change once testing) Thanks! |

Well I guess I should also add that the power delivery is different than the older 600's. They have less power "per bang" than the thumpers, and their bangs are more frequent.
So i'm not sure if that means you'd want more tire or less tire to give time between slipping and gripping (someone posted good info on that from the whole crossplane crank thing and from when tires went from bias to radial in MotoGP bikes. Good read) I'd also hazard a guess that a lot of why sumo guys run big phat tires is because of the lookz, yo. |

"Locktite I put that **** on everything" That is so me, except in torque specs. I torque everything, I found a way to put a philips bit on my torque wrench just so I could torque the bolts that hold on my plastics on my old dirt bike. I torque on the brake mastercylinder cover, I torque everything.
