Howdy - new old guy

Hi, Mark here, long time rider, mostly dualsports (KLR650s and DL100) but a few sport bikes, sport-tours and HDs over the last 20+ years. Current commuter scooter is an '87 KLR with 685 kit and other tweaks. Long time slacker on klr650.net (also as OSF).

Looking to get into cheap side of commuting and learn something about the little Ninja bikes.

Hey Teri ... thanks for the welcome.

Used to live in north Reno a few years back, until the economy blew up and we moved over the hill to Sac. Loved the riding opportunities there, but the job market didn't support my lifestyle (chronic case of multi-bike syndrome).

Props to you for riding the 250 back and forth across the country -IBA indeed!!!

The beauty of Folsom is you've got easy access to the Sierra and California roads, both paved and dirt.

I do want a dual sport. Still looking for one I like in my height range.

Nice, there's a few of us cheap KLR owners over here!

I've been neglecting my KLR quite a bit since I got the ninja.

Thanks! The Orange beastie is an '87 KLR650 (first year of the 650) and she's my second favorite bike ever. Fitted with the 685cc big bore, opened airbox, fatter jetting & KLX needle, aftermarket exhaust, oversize 320mm front rotor & SS brake line, 7 gal IMS tank, and Trailtech meters and headlight. A little lighter and faster than the stocker bike. Flat out on Black Rock Playa she holds 100-105mph for ~20 miles straight across the lake bed. Land speed record was set there, but its still unnerving to run WFO in a tight tuck with very few visual markers about speed or location. Strange place.

KLRs are a simple and rugged canvas that are very adaptable. They were mostly unchanged from 1987 through 2007 (except for a few motor parts and a few electrics). There are too fat and heavy to be a good dirtbike, too light and slow for long distance touring. But tons of fun bombing Death Valley, Moab, or exploring the Sierras and the western states. Wicked fun chasing down squids in the very tight twisties, but be sure your insurance is paid up.

Favorite was the 1995 KLR650 (beautiful Barbie Bike years - pretty pastels)
