Slow Crash/Totalled Bike

Sooo, as of Monday morning, I've joined the bikeless-ish crew. I was traveling on an interstate in CA, not lane-splitting at the time, and getting over to exit. Traffic was moving about 55+ mph, but slower in the exit-only lane. I signaled, checked over my left and right shoulders, and seeing adequate space, began to merge. Alas, someone merged without signalling/cut me off, and then immediately slammed their brakes. Please note I had more than adequate room prior to this, and was slowing down the whole time. I didn't see room to swerve, so I hit the brakes, laid the bike down, separated, and barely slid (looked like 5ft, if that), as the two witnesses both said. I couldn't have been going more that 35-40, and slowing down the whole time. Of course this is the one time I wasn't running my camera.
Anyway, long story short, I'm barely bruised, and am very grateful to @Biscuit for picking me and my busted bike up and being super sweet and supportive.
Looks like a total loss, and as much as I'd love to revive it as a track bike, it is also my daily, so I may just need to accept the payout and say goodbye to my wonderful first bike, some 20k miles after we first met.

Quick! Strip it for useful parts for the bike behind it before insurance takes it! Say they broke off in the crash (not super kidding fyi)

Glad you're okay noob. Stop trying to copy me, it's not worth it!

@Rebecca Haha, maybe? I do love the 250s though. Also, it depends on what happens with insurance. I'm just peeved because I put around $500 into the bike in the last week and a half. New chain, still covered in factory lube, and new Pirelli Sport Demon, just scrubbed in on the Crest at the beginning of last week. Womp-womp.

Thanks @Max and @alex.s. Insurance has already taken pictures. Part-stripping foiled. I'm all good though, sans the insurance hassle and stuff.

Now is a great time to be looking at buying another small bike though.

Bummer about the bike but the bigger story is that you're alive to ride another day. You'll feel way better when you get another bike.

So when are you picking up the R6?

Ouch! Sorry to see this. Glad that you're okay. Bikes will come and go, but the important thing is that we stay.

Is there anything that you'd have done differently? Sorry. Gotta ask...

Good luck with the insurance company!

Ride on,

Glad you're ok physically. There is an amazing selection of bikes out there for you to enjoy shopping for, it's a shame for sure though.

Sidenote: The R6 is an amazing bike As are the N300/R3/RC390

To all who have replied, thank you so much. I'm just trying to focus on getting stuff done and getting a bike again as soon as possible. I have my life and my health, which is irreplaceable. One of the drivers who stopped to help was so relieved and happy I was ok, because there was a semi behind me when I went down, and he was worried it would hit me.

Fully armored, and out of production Scorpion leathers. I was wearing the pants as overpants, since I'm tiny, but it's all pretty thick leather, and I had armor on my knees, hips, elbows, shoulders, and back.
Boots were Dainese Torque RS Outs, and gloves were Held Phantoms. I'll try to post pictures later of the gear post-crash, when I have a chance. Helmet was untouched.

Hahaha, I was waiting for that. I may just get another little Ninja. EternalNewb--doing it wrong.

No need to apologize. I've been over it again and again, and aside from roll my camera, I can't think of anything. I couldn't slow down more prior to making the lane change, due to a semi behind me, and had ample space ahead since there hadn't been any car in the way when I had initiated my lane change. My insurance company also told me in not so many words that I wasn't at fault, but will legally be held responsible as 100% at fault, since they probably won't be able to prove the cutting off/brake checking. I was already slowing down from 35-40 max, and when you see how little damage was on my gear, or me for that matter, it's pretty apparent I wasn't going very fast. Even the CHP officer seemed to be totally on my side, but again, without any proof, I'm screwed.

Thanks for the input, haha. It all comes down to finances, really, as far as swapping up to a 300/390 goes.

The 300 is a great bike and makes a perfect commuter/track bike.

@csmith12 that also includes both me and chone hahaha

though technically I went halfway on that, didn't destroy either bike completely so I got a gsxr instead...would rather have an R6 but it's still a good bike when it runs

Chone gets a pass so far as he hasn't bought a new bike yet, but you on the other hand.... You get a double dose too, there should have been no other viable option after riding my r6 at the track.

Make sure you ask your insurance company how much they want for the bike. Most of the time, you can buy it back dirt cheap and if nothing else, turn around and sell it to someone looking for a project track bike. It's a shame to just let the insurance company take it.

Glad you're ok - commuting on Cali highways can be pretty hellish sometimes.

Glad you're ok - commuting on Cali highways can be pretty hellish sometimes.
Thanks, and while I am really tempted to buy back the bike and flip it as a project/parts bike, I really need the cash to buy a new bike, since my little Putt-putt was my daily driver. In my situation, the $500-600 they want for it, not to mention cost of towing it and all the registration fees and whatnot aren't really worth the amount of money and time it'll take to get me back on two wheels.

And yes, Cali freeways can be poop. The real kicker is that I was within a mile or so of my destination, exiting the freeway when it happened, and I rode something like 20-30 miles from the South Bay without incident.

Yes. I just don't look forward to seeing if I get all the blame and my rates go up. Womp-womp.

sell the engine to max for $500 and you've broke even already and you've still got a bunch of parts left over

Unfortunately, I kinda need the cash now to get mobile again. I can't exactly borrow someone else's car or squat around north of LA conducting the business of parting out a bike from someone else's driveway. I do have work and other obligations, which are sadly time-sensitive.

Ok, maybe not. Maybe I'll just finance a new bike and buy back the 250 to make it the track bike it so clearly wants to be. Damn Putt-putt is always trying to lay over on the pavement.
Do I have to register my bike with the state and insure it if I'm just using it as a track bike?

Nope, no insurance, registration, or license needed. Though you will need a way to get it to and from the track

Hmmm, will have to talk to the insurance guy about that. Phrase it as, "buying back as a parts bike/not for street use."
